This tutorial is featuring Big Hoss from the American reality TV series called "Pawn Stars." It is shown on the History channel. Filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, it chronicles the daily activities at the World Famous Gold & Silver Shop, a 24-hour family business operated by patriarch Richard "Old Man" Harrison, his son Rick Harrison, who opened the shop with his father in 1988, Rich's son Corey "Big Hoss" Harrison, who has worked there since childhood, and Corey's childhood friend, Austin "Chumlee" Russell. The show, which became the network's highest rated show, and the No. 2 reality show behind Jersey Shore, debuted on July 26, 2009. (Wikipedia Notes.) I hope you will enjoy drawing this tutorial. Please fav, show your love, and comment. Thank you all. Peace and love to you.

STEP 3.

Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for hair line and head mass. It does seem to appear upside down. That's because there is more mass at the bottom of his face.

STEP 4.

Don't worry about the lines bowing down. That is to get the right perspective of Big Hoss's face. You can draw in the lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, and d. for mouth.

STEP 7.

Now draw in his ear, the profile of his cheek, jawline, and neck.

STEP 8.

Lastly, observe where the lines of his hair flow (away from his face) together within the guidelines. Take your time to draw the lines and curves of his hair. Patience is your best friend because with it, you'll be able to complete your drawing.

STEP 9.

I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.

STEP 10.

Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Take you kneaded eraser and dab off the shadow outlines or dark lines with your kneaded eraser for a more realistic look as you shade. Shading transition from dark to light (or visa versa) should be smooth... no harsh lines. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.

STEP 11.

I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.

STEP 12.

Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump.

STEP 13.

Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.

STEP 14.

GO WITH THE FLOW: Basically, you're following the direction of object's shape, that is the hair. The hair will curl around, flow from, and slick to the head. The head is like a curved ball, so the hair extends from that ball by the arrowed directions. Keep practicing stroking in one direction, letting the pencil flow off... as if you're painting your nails or brushing off your pants. See? Play with that pencil, honey. See how those strokes FLY OFF THE PAGE. LET IT FLOW, DUDE! ***Those parts... let little strokes of hair (roots) appear at the edge of the parts. Click on this picture and see those tiny strokes.

STEP 15.

This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium, dark, and charcoal gray to his face and hair. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.

STEP 16.

What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a blending stump (since it won't leave lines and will cover a larger area) and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil) on his skin. Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (like his eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, cheek lines, side of face, ears and lips. I also used this application around his the small part of his collar. I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas. I've lightened areas with the kneaded eraser( nose shine and hair strands.

STEP 17.

I sketched in darker with my 9B pencil on his face (bottom of nose, ear shadow, eyelashes, etc.). The darker areas, I applied some pressure. The highlighted areas of his nose, reflected light near his nostrils were added with my kneaded eraser. I placed my 9B pencil flat and barely touching the paper went over the darker side of his face. I made extended dark strokes in his hair also with the point of my 9B.

STEP 18.

Drawing like this is a gradual buildup. I keep sketching, blending and sketching some more. This time, I first blended the pencil sketches with my toritllon to give a smooth transition. I added more dark tones and details to his hair, face, eyebrows, cheek and mouth with a blending stump.

STEP 19.

Here I added more highlights of hair strands in his hair from looking at the reference picture. You can do this with white pastel, white titanium acrylic or watercolor paint. I also lightened his jaw area and smoothed it more by blurring with my digital program. I added small white eyelashes and hair strands after I applied the dark background for dramatic effect. I added some gray and white dots representing pores and a clean shaven face. A little hair (mustache) is show above his upper lip. All this was done in my digital/drawing program. I am closing out now. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on Big Hoss aka Corey Harrison from Pawn Stars. This man has some neat lashes and really smooth hair. (He's a cool & powerful looking dude!) All of you have been wonderful and it has been a great pleasure to do this tutorial with you. Please fav, comment, and show your love here. And I will definitely reply back soon or eventually. Love, peace, happiness, success, and more beautiful days to ya! *hug* *blowkiss*
