1

Start with a circle for the head, and then draw the lining to form the shape of the chest, and back. Next draw an egg shape on the inside of the opening you just made. After that draw a line for the beak.

2

Start sketching out the shape of the woodpeckers head, and make sure you draw a tip for the crest on the back of the head. Once that is finished you can sketch out the shape of the beak, and then under the beak.

3

Now, sketch out the shape of the birds back, and then start drawing in the stripes that are on the side of the face like you see here. Draw the line in the middle of the beak to separate the top and bottom beak.

4

Continue to sketch out the woodpeckers body which includes the neck, chest, and belly. Once that is done you can begin sketching out the wing, and be sure to add some feather line detailing as well as draw in the lining for the tree.

5

Draw more of the tree like you see and then draw a hole and color it in. Detail the tree bark like so and move to step six.

6

For your last drawing step all you have to do is draw out the rest of the woodpeckers wing, and then the tail. Be sure to show the detailed lining for the feathers as seen here. Erase all the guidelines and shapes and you are done!

7

This is what the finished drawing looks like when you are done. I hope you liked this lesson on how to draw a woodpecker, join me again for more drawing fun.

Description: I thought of a bird that is very colorful and popular. Although this species is a site for sore eyes, they can be incredibly annoying if they are in one of your backyard trees. Yesterday I wanted to "draw a woodpecker" because they used to be talked about almost all the time when I was a young girl. I can remember watching the very funny cartoon “Woody Woodpecker”, and thinking to myself, is there really birds that peck wood all day? Well, now that I'm older I can finally answer that question for myself. The reason why they peck at trees all day long is because they are trying to get at the feast inside. The myth that woodpeckers eat wood is totally false. What they are really after is the carpenter ants inside. Woodpeckers dig large holes in trees, and sometimes of the whole is on a smaller tree, the structure will weaken and crack in half. If you're thinking that these birds like to peck on a certain tree species, you're pretty much wrong. The fact is, it doesn't matter what type of tree they attack, as long as there is tasty treats inside, they are one hundred percent happy. The sound that comes from these birds as they make holes, is like a hammer hitting a nail on a wooden plank. The most recognizable woodpecker is the “pileated woodpecker”. They are the most common in Northern America. Their heads have distinctive zebra strips, and a bright red crests. Their beaks are pretty long too. Anyway, this lesson on "how to draw a woodpecker" was pretty fun to draw. If you are an avid bird watcher, or know someone that is, this would be a perfect picture to draw for that someone you know. The reason for all the bird lessons is because spring is here, and the days are getting warmer which means more and more bird species will appear. Have fun guys, and don't forget to rate and comment.
