How to Draw Lips

1

This is just a sketch I did of several different mouths and or lips that I was drawing while I chose the perfect one to do as a lesson. I named some of the expressions that I thought would fit an everyday situation. Browse through it, and see which s

2

This is not really a drawing step, it's more like a detailed description on lips and their shapes. I thought it would be helpful to learn some good information aid you to drawing your lips better.

3

Here is a really helpful step that tells you how you should detail or define your lips that you choose to draw. I talk about how you should shade in your drawing.

4

Here I explain how the top lip is bigger then the bottom lip in most cases. Sometimes, the top lip may be slightly larger than the bottom, but personality I think that is a little rare.

5

Okay, lets begin. Start by drawing two plus marks. This will be the guidelines for the two sets of lips I included in this tutorial.

6

You will use the middle guide, to help you draw the dip of the top lips form as you draw your top lips. It's almost like drawing 1/3 of an apple.

7

You will now sketch in the middle line that is in a vertical direction. This is the line that separates the top and bottom lip.

8

Now that these mouths are almost drawn, you can now sketch out the shapes of the bottom lips. The mouth to the right is slightly open, which means you will have to draw a full shape.

9

When detailing and definition your lips, be sure not to over do it with the sketchy detailing lines. The definition should be light and subtle. Once this is done, the teeth need to be drawn in as you see here.

10

This is basically the same step as nine. The only difference is that I am not giving you a tip. Instead you have to actually detail your lips. Before you do that, make sure to erase the lines and shapes that you drew in step one.

11

In the end, your sketch should look like the one you see here. Now you have some really nice plump looking lips. I hope you learned something new today. Be sure to join me again for more drawing fun.

Description: I have been looking through the lessons that are on the first few pages, and I was reading some of the tutorial descriptions. Teton hinted, more or less, that I should to a lesson on "how to draw lips". At first I said to myself, “I have lips”. The truth is, I don't. I have some tutorials on different types of mouths, but nothing for straight lips. I can not tell you how much fun I had drawing out these lips. At first I didn't know where to begin because there is all different types of lips, which makes choosing the right ones to draw, mind boggling. I decided to draw a set of full lips for the main picture, and then a series of different other types holding expressions. If you where to ask me which was my favorite, I would have to say the lips in the thumbnail. Anyway, when you are done with this tutorial, you will have taught yourself "how to draw lips", step by step. When you are done you can use your choice of tools to shade in your mouths to dress them up a bit. I will be back later with more drawing fun, so stay tuned in.
