how to draw a beautiful harpy

How to Draw a Harpy

Step 1.

In this first step you will be drawing out the guidelines and circle shapes for your harpy. Starting at the top, draw a circle for the head and sketch in the facial guidelines to aid you on drawing a symmetrical face. Now draw a long box looking shape for the torso and waist area. After that is done all you have to do is draw the outlines for the eagle looking wings. This will complete drawing the shapes of the first step now draw the simple line art to connect everything together.

Step 2.

Now here is where you will be drawing or sketching out the body shape of the harpy. But first start off by drawing the outlines for her hair as shown. The best way to learn from all these steps is to enlarge the image because you really can't see the details due to the image being so big in regular format. Okay, now sketch in her pretty looking face by adding the eyes, nose, and mouth. After you got that down packed move onto detailing the wings by outlining where the feathers are going to be positioned at. Now make sure everything is done and looks good. After you give your sketch a once over move to step 3.

Step 3.

This is step 3. Here is where you will be sketching out the definition in her eyes. After you give the eyes of the harpy some brief detailing, move onto the chest and sketch in the straps. I used a zig zag pattern for the straps and for the middle I drew the shape of the halter cups to resemble bird wings, I used the same technique on her bottom piece as well. Next draw the detailing and shading on the feathers on her bottom legs and draw out the bird looking feet claws and all. After that is complete sketch in the feathery looking hair on the tip of the tail.

Step 4.

And welcome to the last step of drawing and sketching which is step 4. Here is where you will probably spend most of your time besides coloring the drawing in. You have to sit there and draw out every strand of hair into big chunks. Get creative and draw them how you want the chunks to look. Also you will be sketching in the feathers throughout the wings, make them look soft and feathery. This is something easily done with pencil or charcoal sketching.

Step 5.

And here she is a beautiful harpy woman. Isn't she so sexy and fun looking with a hint of badness to her. All that is left for you to do is color her in with your own colorful technique or use my color scheme which ever you choose to do is all up to you!

In this delightful tutorial I am going to show you "how to draw a Harpy" from Greek mythology. Now, harpies from Greek myths where known to be winged death spirits. The story of the harpies goes like this; there was a king named Phineas who ruled over Thrace. This king had an extraordinary gift to see into the future, so they labeled him a prophecy. Phineas talked too much by telling the secrets of the Gods, so Zeus got very angry with him because he felt betrayed and violated. Zeus punished Phineas by putting him on an island isolated from everybody with a big buffet of food, but here’s the catch, he could never touch it. He literally had to live there looking at all this delicious food and not able to put a single grape in his mouth. Zeus sent him another surprise, he sent down three sisters of Iris and daughters of Typhon and Echidna. Their names were Aello (who was labeled storm swift), Celaeno (the dark), and Ocypete (the swift wing). What these three winged beauties did was steal the food right from Phineas hands just before he could place the food into his thirst quenching, hunger bearing mouth. Even though the harpy by nature was originally a beautiful long haired woman that had the wings of an eagle and half of their legs from the knee down was that of a bird, they where almost parallel with the siren, both are known for being the angels of death. Even though these creatures sound like mean, spiteful, evil beings, they also had the capabilities to bring life into the world. The tale goes that a harpy was the mother by being the West Wind Zephyros, which is a wind God that brings light spring and early summer breezes to all mankind, or also known as being the mother of Achilles horse Xanthus. Over time the myths change and so does the image of the harpy sisters, this is when they said that the three sisters wanted a more fowl, ugly look to go with their demeanor, so they transformed into ugly looking old hags who then only had the head of a woman, and the full body of a bird. I decided to draw a beautiful harpy with long flowing locks, I mean who wants to learn how to draw an old hag with a body of a big bird, YUK! This tutorial will show "how to draw a harpy" step by step. The image may look hard but it really is quite simple. After you are done with your sketch you can create your own blend of colors for her hair, wings, and suit. I hope you have fun drawing this mythological creature.
