Step 1.
⦁ Now, since many amateur artists make the same mistake of placing the ergot too high or too low, I sketched up a few examples that will show you where to place it correctly. The first incorrect way, is drawing the ergot too high up as well as too small of a size. The ergot looks too small, anatomically incorrect as the horse wouldn't be able to balance correctly compared to its weight. The second incorrect way, is to draw the ergot too pointy and low. This is also unrealistically impossible to balance a 1 ton horse. The correct way, would to draw the ergot, at the very middle of the fetlock, with proportioned size, and a nice seamless curve which transitions into the hoof. Perfect!
Step 2.
So what about the 'Dos and Don'ts' of the hoof shape? Here, I list a few examples that I observe many novice artists make. Notice how all the hooves are out of proportions compared the realistic way they're suppose to be drawn. These variations would be tolerable if the horse was drawn in an extreme cartoon style. Make sure when you draw the hoof, that there is a slight and healthy 'bump' which curves outwards (like an unified canine paw), and creates a slightly flat line to form the base and then curves back up to form the sharp ergot. Perfect hoof shape!
Step 3.
When drawing a horse's head, make sure you keep in mind the spacing between the eyes as well as the eye shape. Take your time and reference as much as possible of various horse heads!
Step 4.
Make the guide shape for the body and head, then sketch in the guidelines for the neck and legs.
Step 5.
Use the head guide to sketch out the shape of the head and face, then draw the mouth line.
Step 6.
Use the one facial guidelines to draw out the eye and color it in. When that is done you can draw the nostrils and then sketch in the facial guidelines which are the indents on the snout.
Step 7.
Continue on with drawing the back part of the horse's neck and then the front part of the neck which connects to the chest. Take your time as you draw out the long flowing mane and then draw the horse ears.
Step 8.
Draw the front legs and chest, then draw in some of the stomach or belly.
Step 9.
Sketch out the straight line for the horse's back, then draw the back legs and hooves.
Step 10.
Lastly, draw in the horse tail. You can create the tail to be as thick or as thin as you like. Erase your guidelines and shapes, then erase your mistakes.
Step 11.
That's it, your horse drawing should come out looking like the one you see here. You can color it in any color you like.

One of the most hardest animals to draw is the horse. I know I have struggled with the task of drawing a horse for so long and even today I am no great artist when it comes to drawing a horse. Anyways, this lesson will be showing you how to draw a horse for beginners, step by step. This drawing is in a sketched style because it is a lot easier to look at and understand when it's a sketch. Even though this tutorial is for beginners, you may still have a difficult time especially if you're a newbie to the whole art thing. Anyways, have fun and I hope you learn something new.
