How to Draw Troops, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima
Step 1. To start off, you will need to sketch out the foundation for the memorial image. This should be a rocky ground like you see here.
Step 2. In this step carefully draw in the outlined shape of the first marine which is standing as he struggles to push the pole in the ground.
Step 3. Draw in the marine's arm in more detail like you see here, then begin drawing the bent leg or knee.
Step 4. Finish drawing the soldier's leg and then draw in the foot. This is just an outline of the silhouette of the memorial.
Step 5. Here you will sketch in the gear that soldiers had to wear on their backs, along with the other marine who is helping raise the flag. Take your time, no need to rush.
Step 6. Starting at the back, cap off the end by sketching the outlined shape of the another marine who is reaching upward in efforts to push up the pole.
Step 7. Draw the arms and hands like so.
Step 8. Lastly, draw in the pole along with the outline of the United States flag. Erase all the mistakes you might have made as well.
Step 9. Here it is, the finished drawing of all five marines struggling to raise the United States flag on the hill of Mount Suribachi. Color in the image solid to have a beautiful silhouette of victory.

For this tutorial I wanted to celebrate the fourth of July by making the silhouette image of the Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima which is a popular photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal back on February 23, 1945. The picture is of five United States Marines and one United States Navy Corpsman raising a heavy pole which has the United States flag at the top. The location where the flag was raised is on Mount Suribachi during World War II when we where battling Iwo Jima. The Marine Corps War Memorial is located next to the Arlington National Cemetery just outside of Washington, D.C. The silhouette in this lesson is just a glimpse of what these men felt like when raising the United States flag. I hope you enjoy this tutorial on drawing troops from the Marine Corps. Stick around because there is more for you all to see.
