How to Draw the Mad Magazine Face

1

Start with a circle for the head guide like so, then sketch in the facial guidelines.

2

Here is where you will begin sketching out the facial structure for Neuman's face. The chin forms a small ball and the cheeks sort of poof out.

3

Use the facial guidelines to sketch out the beady style eyes to start the face process. Next, draw the wide shaped nose, then you can proceed to step four.

4

Next, add some creases over the eyes, then sketch in the puffy bags under the eyes. Draw the eyeballs and color in the pupils.

5

We will form the frown lines, then draw in the big bottom lip, and wide, thinner top lip.

6

Add some dimpling on the lower line of the jaw, then draw in the teeth. Add some definition to the chin too.

7

Sketch in the semi thick bushy eyebrows. Add some freckles over the bridge of Neuman's nose and along the cheeks just under the eyes. The freckles vary in size.

8

Next, sketch out the huge ears, and make sure you detail inside of the ears. The cartilage should stand out.

9

Sketch in the hairstyle which is short but a bit messy at the same time. Detail the hair to add some small strands. Add a wave then erase the mistakes and guides when you feel the drawing is complete.

10

That's it, you are all done. Add some color to Mad magazine's mascot face to complete the lesson.

Description: I'm sure plenty of you have seen this face before. It's the face that is used on the covers of MAD Magazine. Even though the title of this lesson is "how to draw the Mad magazine Face", the actual name for this caricature style image, is Alfred E. Neuman. He has been the mascot for Mad magazine since 1956. Before being a mascot for the magazine Neuman's face has been part of pictography for years. Drawing the Mad magazine face will be a fun experience because Neuman has a very distinct look. I will be back soon with other tuts so hang in there to see what's next.
