How to Draw Dave Mustaine, Dave Mustaine
Step 1. To draw the trash metal icon, Dave Mustain, we should first sketch in some basic guide line. Using a 2H or harder pencil, lightly sketch in a stick figure shape such as this on. Be sure to include the basic shape of the guitar so we know proper hand placement. These lines do not have to be perfect, since they will be erased later on.
Step 2. Next, we should sketch in the basic human form. Doing this will ensure that the figure is proportionate when we go to apply clothing later on. You do not need to include details such as facial feature or fingers. These lines are just guides as well. Mustain has a somewhat muscular build, so make him have a large chest, shoulders, and arms.
Step 3. Let's begin drawing the face. The face will be partially covered up by his hair, so only draw the right eye on the eye line. Draw the nose and mouth, and add a few small wrinkles around the mouth. Draw the contours of the strong chin and side of the face. His eye should be looking down at his guitar.
Step 4. Perhaps Mustane's most well known visual trademark is his long blonde hair. It is very thick and wavy. Have it start at the top of his head and flow down the sides of the face and have the tips blowing in the air somewhat. Draw a large section of hair covering the left side of his face.
Step 5. Next, draw the torso. Have him wearing a form fitting tee shirt, which means that there will be numerous wrinkles stretching horizontally across the torso.
Step 6. Draw the legs together, as he will be using them to hold the base of his guitar. As a heavy metal performer, he often wears form fitting jeans. Draw a stitch line down the side of the pants with horizontal wrinkles near the top.
Step 7. Let's go back up the body and draw the arms. They should both be bent forward as he is reaching around to play the guitar. Draw tee shirt sleeves with some wrinkles. To make things a bit more interesting, give him a pair of wrist cuffs.
Step 8. The hands should have a lot of character to them. He's a thrash metal guitarist, after all. The right hand should be holding a pick, while the fingers of the left hand should be splayed out and each one bent in a different way to indicate that he is playing the guitar very fast. Give him a ring on his left hand as well.
Step 9. The guitar can be a tad tricky. First, start by drawing the shape of the neck. Allow the base of the neck to be longer than needed, so we know the proper placement of the body of the guitar for the next step. You may have to erase some of the torso and left arm in order to draw the guitar neck.
Step 10. Next, draw the body of the guitar. Use the neck of the guitar as a guide. The body of the guitar should have triangular shape to it, with a wedge cut out of the middle. Again, you may have to erase some marks from previous steps.
Step 11. Add more detail to the guitar such as a the knobs and power wire. Draw the strings up the neck and the tuning pegs on the head which the strings attach to.
Step 12. Now that we are done penciling the image, we can ink it using a Micron marker or a brush and India ink. Carefully go over each line with patience and be sure not to accidentally ink any unneeded guide lines. When the ink is dry, erase your pencil marks with a kneaded eraser.
Step 13. You can add more depth to the image by giving it shadow. Establish your light source and use black ink or a fat tipped black marker to shade the opposite side of the figure and every clothing wrinkle and fold. Since he is blonde, it may be a good idea not to shade very much of the hair, if any.
Step 14. If you need to make any corrections, use white ink or opaque white paint. You can also use it to add highlights if needed. And that's how you draw Dave Mustain, of Megadeth!
