How to Draw Anime Horses
Step 1. Regardless of breed, when you are drawing a horse using guidelines you can count on the body being about three circles long, the front knees being lower to the ground than the back knees, and the general rule that a horse is about two circles tall, plus ankles and hooves. For the head, it helps to segment it into three sections; neck, cranium, and snout.
The three horses in the example shown were made with the same skeleton with minor tweaks depending on the breed. For example, the Arabian has a longer neck than the other two breeds, while the Shire has an overall larger frame.
To create believable horses, it's important to understand the differences between the breeds and then employ them in your drawing.
Step 2. Here is a closeup of the heads, pointing out the main differences between the breeds. Though they all started with the same type of skeleton underneath, you can see that each horse has minor differences that help distinguish the breed.
For this tutorial, we'll be focusing on the Andalusian so here's a few heads at different angles.
Step 3. This is a step by step of how to draw each breeds' head. Notice the changes between each horse's facial features.
Step 4. This tutorial will show you how to draw a walking anime Andalusian. Let's start by sketching out the skeleton. The body is at an angle, causing the three circles of the torso to overlap each other slightly.
Step 5. Sketch in the neck and torso, following the curves of the circles closely. Make sure to include a slight dip at the horse's back.
Step 6. The Andalusian has fairly thin legs except for the knees and where the leg connects to the torso. Notice how the right leg is lifted slightly, showing that the horse is in motion.
Step 7. Now time to sketch the back legs. The upper half of the back legs is slightly larger than the front legs, but they still become rather thin below the knees.
Step 8. Hooves can appear drastically different depending on the angle the horse is holding their foot at. Notice how each hoof follows the curve of the foot depending on if it's curved pointed downwards or upwards.
Step 9. Sketch in the face, making sure to put the eye and nostril at the right angle.
Step 10. Horse ears are different than how you would draw a cat's ear or a dog's ear. They fold inward at the bottom, creating a lower case "y" as shown in the example.
Step 11. Finally, sketch in the mane and tail. I chose to do a short mane and a long tail but the style of both can be changed to whatever you would like.
Step 12. Now you have the line art for an anime Andalusian horse. Choose what colors you want the fur and hair to be and then finish with a background.
