How to Draw an Owl Head, Masked Owl

1

Start out by picking your pencils. I used an F pencil for sketching/lines, a 3H for light shading/lines, and a 3B for dark shading/lines. You can find out more about all of my supplies by going to finalprodigy.com and clicking on "art supplies."

2

Start out with a basic sketch. Use the guidelines if you need them.

3

Your sketch should look something like this. Keep it as clean and possible by erasing any lines that you don't need.

4

Build up your sketch by adding a bit more light detail to the front of the face. Build up the mask "border" and work on the owl's outline a bit more.

5

Shade in the background using a 3B pencil the blend is your shading using a blending stump.

6

Use a 3B pencil to lightly go over the darker shading of the eyes. Then go over that using the F pencil. Use the 3H pencil for any light shading.

7

Lightly blend over the face to bring the value down. You don't want it to be pure white. After that use an F or 3H pencil to plan out the flow of the feathers on the face. Also roughly plan the shading of the face (around the eyes, for instance).

8

Use the 3H pencil to add detail to the face. Work from top to bottom. Make your lines follow the flow of the feathers.

9

Now use an F pencil to wok on the "border" of the face.

10

Use 3B and F pencils to smooth out the background and define the outline. Make the owl's outline as natural and smooth as possible.

11

Use a 3B or F pencil to sketch out the shading for the rest of the drawing.

12

Start adding final details to the rest of the owl. You can pretty much accomplish the rest of the shading using only a 3H pencil. Start at the tip of the head and work your way down.

13

Finish up the drawing by using the 3H to shade in the rest of the feathers. Don't forget to add in the spots. Use an F or 3H pencil to darken any areas that the 3H can't handle. Call it done after going over your details and fixing up your shading.
