How to Draw Slash

how to draw slash step 1

STEP 1.

View the Image to see the Items required for this drawing. Also watch the time lapse video for this tutorial. Might be helpful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIlsYjf1CSg

STEP 2.

Choose a reference picture. If you are following this tutorial you can use the picture here. When choosing a reference picture for your drawing choose a clear medium size photograph. Collect a few pictures, study them a bit just to get an idea what you getting yourself into and choose the best one. This one was a bit big to draw on A4 size paper and get all the details in so I cropped it a bit. Make sure it’s cropped such that it fits to A4 size. I am drawing on A4 size paper because the largest my scanner can scan is A4.

STEP 3.

Print out the cropped picture with a grid drawn on it with a software such as CorelDraw X5 or Photoshop. (Easier to print out with grid than having to draw two grids) I did it without printing by looking at the screen. You can do this part any way you prefer. Now draw the same size grid on the drawing paper and get the outline. Draw this grid using an HB pencil so that it’s not so dark you can’t erase it or too hard to dent the paper. This is necessary if you want to get the proportions right. Some people do it without the grid using rulers and other methods. Now draw the outline with the help of the grid.

STEP 4.

You have to remember this is not drawing a cartoon. The outlines represent what we see as the edge of something. What creates this edge is the contrast between the colors. For example we can’t see the hat clearly in this reference picture if the background was the same color as the hat. These outlines are just for guidance once we start shading it’s all about creating these variations in contrast with the pencils to finish the drawing. At this point I shaded with the face with a 2H then HB pencil. Drew the hair a bit. Then I created the hard shadows using a B pencil. Refer to the picture carefully to see how far the shadow is falling and such. Leave the glasses for now.

STEP 5.

Focus on the nose now. First do a rough shading of the nose darkening the edge of nostrils and the shadows a bit. Use 2B for the darkest value for now. Leave the middle of the nose. Then blend it as I say to the shape of the nose with blending stump if you don’t have blending stump the q tips and tissue will do nicely. It’s important to blend to the shape of the nose since we are trying to get a 3D effect we don’t want to create a flat looking nose. Then add darkest shadows using the 4B pencil right under the nose and glasses. Use HB and 2H pencils to shade the sides of the nose and such. Then I used the kneaded eraser and tapped the middle of the nose and the top part of nostrils a bit to lighten it up. If you don’t have kneaded eraser tap using the vinyl eraser round the edges a bit so you don’t get sharp lines. Finally to create the skin texture a bit I used a small blending stump which had a little bit of the graphite and used the tip and tapped around the nose.

STEP 6.

Now for the mouth, first I defined the shadows a bit more with B pencil then shaded a bit with HB and 2H pencil. One of the key features of slash is his mouth specially the corners. So I focused on it a bit, slowly shading around the mouth referring to the picture carefully. The lower lips is a lot lighter than upper lips cause the light falls on it more. The upper lips edge catches the light a bit more and creates a line kind of space that separates lips from the skin. Try not to shade over it that much just lightly .blend to get rid of the harsh lines and edges that you don’t need. Finally when I was happy with how shaded I added the darkest shadows with 4B. Add some lines to the lower lips making those wrinkles. Sharpen a corner of the vinyl eraser and add little lines to the lower lips. Use the kneaded eraser and tap the lower lips lightly if it’s too dark. I usually work from light to dark this way it’s easier to correct mistakes. So when you shade, shade lightly and keep darkening it.

STEP 7.

Now gradually Darken the face adding the shadow of the ring and so one. The main light is coming from the lift side so the right side of the face is a bit darker. As always when blending and shading blend and shade to the shape of the face. For example the chin is rounded so when shading shade in a curve.

STEP 8.

Do the same for the neck shading and gradually darkening. Remember if you want to make a bit of highlight or want to lighten an area a bit you kneaded eraser and tab a bit. The more you tab the lighter it gets. If the Kneaded eraser gets too dirty with graphite stretch it a few times and it will get clean. You can achieve the same effect with vinyl eraser. But the kneaded eraser makes it a lot easier.

STEP 9.

The hand was a bit of a nightmare. The variation of contrast was so little it was hard to see the variations. But the basic things are start shading lightly and darken it gradually. So I started off with a base shade of 3H. This hand is lighter than the face as more light falls on it. Then blend the base shade and add the shadows with a HB pencil. Carefully refer to the picture and see where the nerves and bones are poking out at make the shadows. Then add the dark edge of the palm with a 2B (you can darken it more later if needed) define the fingers and the ring and shade it. Add a few hairs to the hand this gives it texture. To create the highlights on the knuckles use the kneaded eraser. For the nerves use the sharp corner of the vinyl eraser. The highlights and the dark shadows are important as this gives the depth. Also don’t forget to add the shadow created by the shirt and metal bracelets. Where the fingers bend its darker so make sure to add the wrinkles there and make it a bit dark. Remember to refer to the picture and blend if it’s looking rough where it’s not supposed to. For example the ring should be really smooth with a bright highlight to get the metal effect.

STEP 10.

Making the next hand is the same as the other. But this one is way darker as it further away from the light and behind the guitar. Make a base shade blend it and start adding the shadows. Gradually darken it. Add the highlights where it’s suppose to be. Lighten parts where needed. Go slowly if you rush it won’t look nice and always refer to the picture you are not drawing from memory. And add the darkest value last and make sure it’s blended nicely not just a dark line. Use different values. If you use a HB pencil over an area where 2B is laid it gets a little darker. Use this to your advantage to create gradients and such.

STEP 11.

Now for the metal bracelets, If you study the bracelets the metal bracelets has a lot of highlights or specular. This is the key to drawing metal. Make an outline of the highlights on the metal so you do not make the mistake of shading on it. If you shade on it it’s difficult to erase such sharp highlights which are bright, so even if you erase the graphite kind of stays on the paper. Next shade around the area you just marked and blend carefully. Some areas are dark and others are not so as always refer to the picture and do it. For the last band I made a pattern show in this step picture and shaded around it made some leaving small circles as highlights. Next I added the screws the guitar bridge’s metal circular things and the switch behind his palm. For the bridge circular thing I made a circle and left a small circle inside without shading (once you shaded the whole bridge it will look fine)

STEP 12.

For the shirt it looks complicated but it’s actually easy. First add a base shade with 3H and blend it nicely. Then add thick lines and thin lines referring to the picture. Use a few different values of pencil to create the variation. Draw the shirt section by section makes it a lot easier. Near the shoulder there are some folds in it, draw the lines as if it’s going around the folds. Put some lines using the sharp corner of the eraser where it should be. As usual use the kneaded eraser if it gets too dark. It takes time so take it slowly

STEP 13.

The rim of the glass is made up of metal so you can see the bright speculars. Make an outline of them and start shading around it. As this is really dark you can use the 4B pencil directly without gradually darkening it. When drawing you might smudge the drawing with your palm so keep cover the area under your palm when drawing to prevent this. As long as you don’t move the paper it will be fine.

STEP 14.

For the belt around the hat, first do the metal parts. Shade gradually the metal plates. By now I hope you have an idea of how to shade. The metal piece in the middle looks little beat up to get this effect after adding the highlights use the blending stump smudge it a bit gives it a dented look. The ring around has some kind of pattern for this I added a dots and smudged a bit and blended and again added the smudges. For the belt itself I shaded directly with a 4B shading lightly gives a lighter shade. Behind the belts metal plates the shadows are darker so shade a bit hard there. (I forgot to do the collar when I did the shirt so I did the collar here)

STEP 15.

The guitar looks really difficult but work slowly and patiently. Shade the bridge and the underside of the guitar neck with a 4B and then focus on the guitar neck. For the frets give a dark shadow and a highlight. Refer to the pictures and do this. (Use B,HB and 2B for the shadows). While doing this you might lose the guitar strings so mark the strings carefully so that you can draw them again later. Put a dot at the two edge of the paper so you can draw the line again later. After making all the frets draw the strings with a line. Then put a small shadow on the guitar neck for the string (small thing which cannot be noticed but even so important). Then put the highlights on the guitar strings with a sharp corner of the eraser. Next shade the guitar with 4B and then leave the area under the bridge. With a tissue paper blend the area slightly then drag the tissue paper with the finger across to create the slight pattern there. (if this does not look nice always can use the kneaded eraser)

STEP 16.

For the hair use 4b and shade the area- while shading use a circular motion easier this way to give a feel of curly hair. Put some fine hair that is flying around also on his finger. To make it feel like it’s a mass of hair use an eraser (kneaded or vinyl) and start to make small semi circles here and there. Put more near the glasses. This makes the small highlights in the hair.

STEP 17.

While making the hat you have to create the rim of the hat at the top and the bottom.. to create the highlight shade around the highlight then blend with blending stump.

how to draw slash step 18

STEP 18.

Finally I put a background and kept correcting small mistakes (hair the details on guitar and such). Drawing this would TAKE A LOT OF TIME, so go slowly, break the drawing in to sections and focus on a certain section and do section by section. If you have any questions ask in the comments I will be happy to help you. In the future I will upload tutorials that focus on only nose or eyes or mouth and such. If you followed this tutorial show me your work. Watch the time lapse video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIlsYjf1CSg
