Hello once again to another drawing tutorial here on DragoArt. So far I have showed you how to draw some pretty cool things for the upcoming holiday Halloween. Let’s do a quick recap on what has been submitted so far. Alright we have tutorials on vampire fangs, a coffin and right now I will be showing you how to draw a tombstone or gravestone. I say either a “tombstone or gravestone” because different people refer to this grave attire in different ways such as memorial stones, grave markers or headstones. But for now we will refer to them by either gravestone or tombstone okay. Now these stones have one main purpose; to give remembrance of the deceased. In the early days people would use pieces of wood with hand graved markings on them which were either hammered into the grave or nailed to a stake. Cemeteries came about when the black plague broke out and the dead were still spreading the disease because they were being buried in shallow graves close to homes. Appointed burial sites where used in 1348. But because these cemeteries where becoming more and more overloaded, the dead was still spreading disease. It wasn’t until 1665 that the English Parliament ruled that grave depths be made at six feet. The first cemetery similar to those back in the day was built in Paris around 1804 it was called the "garden" cemetery. The Pèere-Lachaise has famous names buried there today like Oscar Wilde, Frederick Chopin, and Jim Morrison. Let’s talk about the early materials that gravestones were made out of in the early days. At first they were made of slate, this material was available in New England. After slate, then came the all popular marble, but the only problem with marble was that it would erode too quickly and the names over time became unreadable. The next raw mineral that was found to be a good stone candidate was granite. Granite has since been the main component to gravestone making. This tutorial will show you how easy it is to draw your own cartoon tombstone or gravestone step by step. The instructions are super easy and the steps are even easier. I will be back with more cool tutorials in a bit. But for now pick up a pencil and start drawing. Peace out.

How to Draw a Cartoon Tombstone or Gravestone

how to draw a cartoon tombstone or gravestone step 1

STEP 1.

Start this first step with basic guidelines and shaping so you can have a frame to work with. First draw out the shape of the tombstone from the bottom up. So you will draw a straight line coming up from the bottom and then round it off at the top and then repeat this same step. Now you will draw the guidelines on the front of the stone. Then you will draw the guidelines for the bat wings.

STEP 2.

Here in this step you will first draw the lining for the bat like design on the middle hump of the gravestone. Then you will start outlining the inside to give the stone a sense of shape and dimension. after that start sketching out the base with some simple straight lines and then begin the inscription of R.I.P in the middle in any style you choose.

STEP 3.

Begin this first step by drawing out the shape of the bat wings and then draw a round crown like shape that goes around the bat like design at the top hump. You will next draw any design you wish but I chose to draw a skull in one corner and a cross in the other. From those two designs draw two curved lines and detail the R.I.P inscription. You will end this step by detailing the base as shown.

STEP 4.

Okay you are getting closer to finishing this drawing of a tombstone. What you will first do here is detail the wings with a few lines and then detail the skull by drawing in the eye sockets. From the two curved lines you drew in step 3 you will now make them into spider webs as you can see here. If you want you can start erasing some of the guidelines.

STEP 5.

In this final drawing step you will be drawing in the sharp teeth and eyes on the image and detail the base a bot more. Now you can erase the rest of the guidelines that you drew in step one. This will clean up your drawing.

STEP 6.

This is your finished drawing of a headstone. All you have to do is color it in and give it a name. That will do it for this tutorial on how to draw a cartoon tombstone or gravestone. I will be back once again with more so stick around folks.
