With this next tutorial you will all be learning how to draw an armadillo. This animal comes in twenty different varieties. Amazingly out of all twenty there is only one that lives outside of Latin America. The one that lives on the outside away from the others is the nine banded armadillo and this species can be found in the United States. It is no surprise that the armadillo’s race is mostly based in Latin America, the word armadillo means “little armored one” in Spanish. This weird looking and created animal has bony plates that cover the back, head, legs, and tail. It use to be that the turtle was the only animal that came with full body armor, but armadillos are the only living mammals that wear these protective shells on their body. If you were to guess, what other animals would you say that the armadillo is cousins to? Well if you guessed anteaters and sloths you are absolutely right. Like the anteater, they have pointy or shovel-shaped snouts and like the sloth they have small eyes. They also come in two sizes and colors. The first size is six inches long, and has a salmon colored hide, this one is called the pink fairy armadillo. The other is five feet long and a dark-brown colored hide, this one is called the giant armadillo. The rest of them come in black, red, gray, or a yellowish color. The myth that these animals can roll up in a ball and totally enclose themselves in a hard covered shell is not true at all. The only armadillo that has this ability is the three banded species. They live in areas like the rain forests, grasslands, and semi deserts, they have to live in warm climates because they have a low fat count which means that cold weather can wipe out this specie of animal entirely. There is a movie called Steel Magnolias that has a blood red cake of an armadillo made for a wedding reception. That was pretty neat when they cut into the cake and it was all red looking. This tutorial will show you how to draw an armadillo step by step. I will be back with another drawing tutorial in a bit, but for now stick around and follow the easy steps to draw your very own armadillo.

STEP 2.

In this step you will make several shapes to form the body. Start with the guideline for the snout and then draw out the head shape which is sort of oblong. Then make a big wide round shape for the upper body and then a mid section and then finally the rear. After you are done with that you can draw out the limbs as shown.

STEP 3.

Okay first thing you will do is draw out the eras and shape out the snout. Then start sketching in the plate lines along the back as shown to you here. You will also need to draw a total of eight or nine lines that resemble stitches for the plated tail. Guidelines for the toes and then move to the next step.l

STEP 4.

As you can see you will begin shaping out and detailing the head of the armadillo. After that you can start shaping under the animal to make him look loose and bumpy. Begin drawing in the lining for the tail and the toes. After you have completed this step you can proceed on.

In this last drawing step you will color in a circle for the beady eye and then detail and define the hide with different sized circles scattered all over the body. Finish the tail and toes and then start erasing all the guidelines that you drew in step one to clean up your sketch.
