How to Draw Monkeys

how to draw monkeys step 1

STEP 1.

First off we'll go over a few things that you need to know before you start drawing your monkey. A lot of people make mistakes about what is and isn't a monkey. Monkeys don't come in all shapes and sizes, most types of monkeys don't get very tall at all. Monkeys also have tails. Primates such as orangutans and apes are something different and they don't have tails. They are also a lot bigger than monkeys.

STEP 2.

Monkey faces are similar to the face of a person. The orientation of the features is the same but there are some differences. Monkeys' ears are rounder and stick out from the sides of the head. Their exposed skin, even when young, has wrinkles over it. They also don't have a very pronounced nose and it is more flush with the rest of the face.

STEP 3.

A monkey's tail is strong and acts as something to help them balance when they're climbing around in the treetops. They also can use them to catch them self if they're falling and use them to swing.

STEP 4.

Their hands are similar to ours as well, they have the same number of fingers that we do and they are laid out about the same. The fingers of a monkey are long and skinny, but the last knuckle is around and the finger ends in a round nub that helps them climb trees and grip onto things.

STEP 5.

the overall shape of their feet is like our, but their thumb or big toe is located lower down towards the center of the foot, making it sort of look like he has an extra pair of hands. The toes are long and end the same way that the fingers do.

STEP 6.

Now we can get to drawing our monkey. We'll do a series of three circles connecting to one another, one for the head, one for the chest and one for the hips. We'll draw out lines for it's arms, legs and tail as well as do a cross section on the head to mark off the face.

STEP 7.

After that we'll draw out the main shapes of his face and add his little features.

STEP 8.

From there we'll draw out the rest of his head and his ears as well. You can make the lines fuzzy if you like, monkeys are very hairy.

STEP 9.

Now onto our little buddy's arms and hands. Once again, making the lines look more like hair instead of just long straight lines.

STEP 10.

We'll do the same technique for the legs and the back of our monkey.
