Here I tried my best to explain on how to draw Drake. If you have any questions ask in the comment section, I will try my best to help you. The Images in the tutorial are in gif format That's why they look a bit out of focus. The final drawing will be uploaded to my artwork on this site and on to Deviantart.

STEP 2.

Choose a reference picture. I chose this one because I like his pose in this. But there are other people in this so crop out Drake

STEP 3.

But still there is an arm that we don't need. We can deal with that later. Next step is to get the outline of drake on the drawing paper. You can use free hand to get the outline but that would take a lot of time. Good practice if you have time. If you don't have time make a grid and get the outline. To make a grid either we can print out the cropped picture and draw the grid on it or we can use software like corelDRAW X4 or adobe Illustrator; scale the picture to real size and draw a grid on it. You can do it the way you prefer. The size of the grid depends on you. If you feel like you need more of those squares to get the proportions correct draw as many as you want. I don't like to draw so many columns and rows; just enough to get the important lines and then use those lines as points and get the next lines. (Hope you can understand) While drawing the grid don't draw with a 6H- 2H pencil thinking light pencils will make it easier to rub off. Though they rub of easily, because those are hard pencils they might dent the paper while you are trying to make the lines visible. This will show through when you shade. Don't use too dark pencils either. A HB pencil is the best to do this

STEP 4.

Now while drawing the outline when it comes to that arm leave it and draw the left side of the shirt. Add some folds to the shirt. I left the A on the hat because I want to do something else with it. Define where the shadows start or gradually end.

STEP 5.

It is time to shade. I started with the nose. It’s not a must to start with the nose. You can start with the lips if you want. First lay in the hard shadows of the nose with the 5B pencil then use a lighter pencil to add the lighter shadows. When you are done shading with the pencil will look like the first fig in the image. It does not look smooth like the nose in the reference picture. To achieve the smoothness use the blending stumps to blend the shadows and smooth out the nose. When you use the blending stump keep the strokes to the shape of the nose. Then it would look like the second figure in the image. Repeat the process of add shadow’s blending it until you match the tone of the picture. Remember if you darken a spot too much use the Kneaded Eraser. Tap the area you want to lighten and it will gradually lighten up as the eraser picks up the graphite. If you don’t have a kneaded Eraser, use the normal eraser. It won’t do the job as good as a kneaded eraser

STEP 6.

Now the lips! First draw the dark line where the two lips meet. Then add a base shade to the lips. Don’t make it too dark. A B pencil will do. Add those wrinkles (I guess) on the lower lips and upper lip. But don't overdo it After this blend a bit. Again blend with the shape of the lips. Add those wrinkles a bit more if it’s needed. You can use the mechanical pencil for this if you like. Carefully refer to the picture and add shadows to the places necessary Use the Kneaded Eraser to lighten up where light hit. Don't need to blend after every pencil mark. If the shaded area is looking too rough blend it. Use a sharp corner of the eraser to add the highlights to the wrinkle. If it’s not sharp sharpen with a blade or something

STEP 7.

Now I can’t work further without adding a base layer for the face and the neck. Take a B pencil and gradually shade the whole face. Don’t put so much pressure while doing this. You might want to define the hard shadow created by the hat and the jaw a bit more, might lose it when blending this layer. For Blending this layer don’t use the blending stump; it’s great for doing small areas. For this use a piece of tissue paper Work around the mouth a bit. Define the dark areas and light up the light areas. Just above the upper lip and lower lip there is a bit light area. I left this bit for now and worked around it and did a bit of detail on it later.

STEP 8.

I didn’t draw the mustache yet. I worked around the mouth a bit more adding shadows. I didn’t have to blend much, now that I have a base shade. The hard shadow below the lower lip is not just a shadow. It’s also part of the front beard. So put short lines that extent downward. Use different values of pencil for this so that it creates shadows made by the hairs plus the hairs. Next I defined the cheek bones a bit by darkening areas and lightning up areas. (At this point it looks more like slash; need that hair and the shaded) While the 5B is a dark value if you shade lightly it won’t get that dark. Depends on how much pressure you are applying. So this can be used to darken areas little bit. Like the edge of the face near the cheek bone. After the cheek bones are done I started to work on the jaw line. This area is very dark so apply a bit of pressure but not too much. Once you shaded the shadow use the blender blend to the direction shown in the image it will give roundness to the jaw line

STEP 9.

I started the beard after the shading the jaw line. While drawing the beard don’t just put lots of dots. If you include dots plus lots of little lines it would look better. Use a dark value and a lighter value. I used a 2B, B and HB while drawing the beard. First draw with the HB and put some small short lines and a few dots with the direction of the beard. Then use B and put darker lines and dots. And then 2B and refer to the picture and put the darkest. Spread the small lines don’t put them too close to each other. Put them close together when it comes near the jaw line. If you look closer the hairs on the mustache are even smaller. So that means nearly all dots and even shorter lines. After it’s done if the some place looks too bright because the base layer is too light; shade with a B or 2B if necessary very lightly and gradually build up the tone. If you lose the hairs when you do it add them. Use the tissue paper if you need to blend When I was happy with it I started to shade the hard shadows under the hat. Refer to the picture. On the right eye you can see some of it and there are some areas which gradually lights. Draw the lines and leave it to blend later. Don’t forget the highlights in the eye even on the left. Even if they are very dark highlights it’s important. Draw a circle and separate the high light and shade around it.

STEP 10.

I did the rim of the hat too. You can see lines going across the rim of the hat. Draw the lines with a dark pencil and cover the whole rim with a lighter one and blend it. Once I was done with that area under the hat I worked on the neck and the ears. This part was very easy just put in the shadows and blend. I used tissues for blending on the neck and blending stump for the sharp corners in the ears. The dark shadow created by the jaw line gradually decreases so blend it down a bit. Some of the beard can be seen under the chin so add those hairs but don’t make them that dark. Remember that light part around the lips I left. At this point I darkened it very slightly it was popping out too much

STEP 11.

For the shirt I started around the neck area. If you look closely around the collar area there are kind of lines going around so first I took the 5b sharpened it drew those lines. Then I made the shadows. The shadows in the folds are also done in 5B. With a 3B and 5B (shading lightly) then I shaded the whole t-shirt. I blended with blending stumps plus tissues (for large area) made the folds. While shading and blending be careful not shade where there chain is. Had to use the kneaded eraser a bit on those folds For the chain I put some parallel lines along the chain using HB and B pencils. Then with a sharp corner of the eraser put in the highlights.

STEP 12.

For the hat I put a base layer of shade using a HB pencil around the hat avoiding the centre. Then blending with a clean tissue paper; if you use a used one might get darker than you want. Blend towards the centre of the hat. After blending take the HB or B pencils and put the sharp lines around the hat where it’s needed. As before with a sharp corner of the eraser put in the highlights I was thinking of putting Drake on the hat but at this point I decided to put my name on it; you can put anything you want if you try this. Put the outlines of the letters lightly (could have chosen a better style). Then refer to the letter A on the reference picture you can see the edge of the letter is dark and spikes inwards. Use a 2b pencil for this we don’t want to make it too dark. Don’t get too carried away with the spike inward part. Then with a B pencil fill the inside with a curve zigzag shape Blend this very lightly because the embroidery has a lot of texture in it.

STEP 13.

Most of it is done at this point. Look at the drawing from far, close, upside down, hold it towards the mirror and see. Mistakes will be there, areas that should be dark too light vice versa. Keep correcting them till you are happy. For this drawing I decided to put a dark background. I did it with a b pencil but used to blending slump to blend it hoping to get some kind of texture. Which I got but I changed my mind I didn’t want the background so I start to rub of around Drake slowly. It created a glow effect which I liked so I left it at that. Draws slowly don’t rush it this will take time. For me it took around 14 hours. Might have been faster if I didn’t have to scan after every change I made. Once you are done you want to put it up on a website? So you scanned it but the scan looks nothing like the drawing it’s brighten up there is some shade of yellow colour in it? To fix that edit it in Adobe Photoshop or such software. Play with the levels, brightness, shadow and highlights until you get the result which look like the drawing.
