How to Draw Chibi Princess Peach

how to draw chibi princess peach step 1

STEP 1.

Like with all drawings containing a figure, you want to start with a wire frame. A wire frame is a great tool to use; creating ease for poses and positioning of the character. Since we are working with chibi, the frame is extremely simple. Notice how the head ( not including the hair) makes up about 1/3 of the body. This is called head lengths and for chibis 2-4 head lengths is about average.

STEP 2.

Now let's add some meat to them bones. In this step you want to define the body shape and the head shape that you will be working with. Once again, since we're doing a chibi, you don't have to worry about a lot of detail in the hands and the feet.

STEP 3.

Now that we have some muscles on our frame, we can start sketching out the details that will make this base into princess peach. We'll start with the head. A tip to keeping to the character is try to make the face look as it would if their original artist had done it. It's part of how they look so you want to get the face as close as you can. With the hair as well. Also, notice that I didn't stop at the arms and the legs while drawing her hair. This is perfectly fine as we are just working with sketching out the details at the moment, don't be afraid to go over other lines right now

STEP 4.

Now we'll add her dress and gloves. Once again, no need to be perfect right now, everything will be refined during the lineart parts of the picture. Make sure to remember her broach and her sash, along with the pleats and the band in the skirt. Notice how her gloves aren't fitted but sort of fan out around her elbows.

STEP 5.

Now that we have the sketch done for all the details, we can move onto the first lineart. I say first because with the process I do, I normally do two sets. One for use when coloring and one to sort of finish off the picture at the end. The first lines don't have to be super dark or exactly perfect, you can always go back and tidy them up after you've colored. You don't have to use black for your lines, you can use any dark neutral tone such as a dark brown or a dark red and in some cases even blue. Make a new layer and trace the details you've drawn on the sketch to make your lineart.

STEP 6.

Now for the colors. From this point on you wont be needing your sketch layer anymore, delete it or turn it on invisible if you would like to hold onto it. First choose a color that you wont be using as one of the base colors for your picture, green works or you can always go with grays or browns. Block off your colors(each on a separate layer) starting with the skin. Everything will go on top of the skin (though you will have to do a little erasing with the hair) just like you wear your clothes on top of your skin instead of under it. for smaller items, just as the jewelry, you can put all on one layer, even if you're using different colors.

STEP 7.

Shading. Once again, starting with the skin, choose a tone that is slightly darker than your base color. Use a solid brush to start out with to block off your shaded areas, then choosing a tone between your base color and your shadow color, switch to a softer brush and feather the line between the shadow and the base. This will give a nice soft smooth effect. Repeat for all layers. For the blush, make a new layer and set it to multiply, take a light pink and a soft brush and gently apply, you don't ever want to over do it with makeup.

STEP 8.

Now would be a good time to go back and quickly tidy up your layers, cleaning up any color that have gone outside your lines. Onto the highlights. Never use white for your highlights, it's too strong and it can wash out your pictures. I suggest using a very pale yellow when doing chibies, it will look almost white and will go fine on top of everything. Make a new layer for your highlights and take a small soft brush. Follow the curve of the hair and the features on the face along with the edges of the dress. The eyes and jewelry will get highlight spots instead of lines. Notice how the face and hair have more highlights than the dress. This is because your skin and hair produce oils, thus the sheen a little bit differently than fabric does.

STEP 9.

Now that we have all the coloring done, it's time for the last lineart. Make a new layer on the very top and once again, outline the details. Be a little bit bolder this time and make sure to keep your lines tidy. You don't have to remove the original lines, but you can opt for it if you want to, I normally just set them to multiply and then make them a little more translucent. But there you have it. Chibi Princess Peach. You can use the tips I gave you on other chibi pictures as well so have fun!
