As a girl, I love drawing clothing for female characters which includes children. For a long time I was unaware that drawing clothing was such a sensitive subject. That is why I wanted to do a tutorial that can help girls, and even boys to learn "how to draw dresses", step by step. As with anything, there is plenty of ways to draw a dress for figures of the female gender. One of the three more popular styles of dresses is a long gown style, a thigh high length dress, and a knee high ruffled dress that is commonly used for dancing and such. I myself love long and knee length styles, but when I’m drawing a female character from anime and manga series, I have to draw clothes that they actually wear instead of dressing them with my own style. I think you will find this tutorial very helpful, and if you take your time you might even do a better job with drawing dresses than you think. I really love the way that this tutorial came out, and for some odd reason my own drawing inspired me to do some female character sketches and using one of the dresses that I created on my models. Not only will you learn "how to draw dresses", you will also receive some helpful tips and tricks on how it should be done. If there is another type of clothing that you need help with drawing and you would love to see it as a lesson, all you have to do is let me know and I will fill your request as soon as possible. I will be back with my last submission so stick around to see what else I have in store for all of you. Peace out people, and stay creative. Adios peeps!

How to Draw Dresses

how to draw dresses step 1

STEP 1.

This step explains how a long gown should flow when you draw it out. The position and on the sides of the dress should be straight, and then the bottom of the dress should contain all the detailing. If you have a design that calls for ruffles, you will draw them at the ends, and add the crease detailing as follows.

STEP 2.

The tip here explains how you should add creases and folds wherever curves are going to be drawn. Notice there is a crease or fold at the waistline, and near the tummy.

STEP 3.

Ruffles are sometimes hard to draw. Start off by drawing a long set of 'squiggly' lines that will shape the base of the ruffles. Add lines that separate each ruffle at the end of each curve.

STEP 4.

You should not see a full outline of breasts when there are clothes over them. Women wear 'bra's' and that shapes the breasts. Add a few creases over the breast area that add presence that the dress is over 'un-leveled' forms.

STEP 5.

For this style of dress, be sure to draw the sides down, and add the folds and ruffles at the bottom of the dress. Notice along the sides of the dress they should curl inward instead of outward.

STEP 6.

Since you are drawing three different figures, you will be working triple the time. All the stick figures are uniform so what ever you do, do it the same for all three female models. Draw three heads, and three body frames like so.

STEP 7.

Here you will begin sketching out the shapes of the mannequin faces, and their simple hairstyles. Once that is all done, start sketching out their full body shapes like so. This includes the necks, shoulders, arms, hands, torsos, thighs, legs, and feet.

STEP 8.

Now what you will do for the final step is sketch out each dress on each female model. You will first draw the collar lines for them all which is at the breast line, and then draw the straps, sleeves, and then the length of each dress. Add the wrinkles, creases, ruffles, and pleats. When that is done add some shading and detailing as well to finish them off. Erase all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one.

STEP 9.

Here is what the models and their dresses look like when you are all done. Now you can color them all in using your own unique style and coloring technique. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on how to draw dresses.
