I thought of a bird that is very colorful and popular. Although this species is a site for sore eyes, they can be incredibly annoying if they are in one of your backyard trees. Yesterday I wanted to "draw a woodpecker" because they used to be talked about almost all the time when I was a young girl. I can remember watching the very funny cartoon “Woody Woodpecker”, and thinking to myself, is there really birds that peck wood all day? Well, now that I'm older I can finally answer that question for myself. The reason why they peck at trees all day long is because they are trying to get at the feast inside. The myth that woodpeckers eat wood is totally false. What they are really after is the carpenter ants inside. Woodpeckers dig large holes in trees, and sometimes of the whole is on a smaller tree, the structure will weaken and crack in half. If you're thinking that these birds like to peck on a certain tree species, you're pretty much wrong. The fact is, it doesn't matter what type of tree they attack, as long as there is tasty treats inside, they are one hundred percent happy. The sound that comes from these birds as they make holes, is like a hammer hitting a nail on a wooden plank. The most recognizable woodpecker is the “pileated woodpecker”. They are the most common in Northern America. Their heads have distinctive zebra strips, and a bright red crests. Their beaks are pretty long too. Anyway, this lesson on "how to draw a woodpecker" was pretty fun to draw. If you are an avid bird watcher, or know someone that is, this would be a perfect picture to draw for that someone you know.
