Now as you know I am a big dragon lover and when I heard that this movie was coming out, I just had to do a lesson on one of the dragons from the flick. So, having said that, let me say that you will learn “how to draw Toothless”. Night Fury's given name is Toothless, and he is the black colored dragon in the movie and from the description on the official website, Night Fury is the rarest, and smartest dragon species. His dark colored hyde really stands out against it's yellow colored eyes. Although this beast is supposed to be a dragon, he has the face of an imp or something like that. I think the wings, and tail is a wicked cool design for this character. In the movie Night Fury has the largest wing to body ratio out of all the dragons in existence making him the fastest, highest and longest flying dragon. Toothless is accompanied by Hiccup, a young Viking teenager that is what you call the "black sheep" of his tribe. Hiccup goes on a journey of his lifetime, and experiences a world through the eyes of a dragon. The story seems really interesting and it’s actually based on the book written by “Cressida Cowell”. As soon as the movie is released, I will be the first in line to watch it. I know it’s going to be good because it’s by the same studio that made Shrek, Madagascar, and King Fu Panda. I know for a fact that you will all enjoy this lesson on “how to draw Toothless, step by step”. How to Train Your Dragon is bound to be a big hit, and when it becomes popular, you will already have taught yourself the skill to drawing the dragons from the movie. STEP 1.
Drawing Night Fury should be relatively easy. All you need to do first is sketch out the shape of the head, neck, and full body length and shape. Next sketch out the large outlined shape of his wings, and then add the long tail line and leg shapes.
STEP 2.
Here you will start sketching out the shape of the head and face as you see here. Night Fury has fin like frills on the sides of his head, and a large wide looking mouth.Add the lining for the eyes too.
STEP 3.
You can go ahead and finish sketching out the face which includes the eyes, mouth, and teeth. Next, start drawing the large wings and then move to the next step. Notice how I am taking this tutorial slow so that all can easily replicate the dragon character.
STEP 4.
Now you will start having some fun. Add the small spikes in the middle of the head, and then down the spine. Add the bottom row of teeth, and then draw the chest, belly and two front legs and claws. Lastly start the process of the hind leg, and then add some detailing to the body.
STEP 5.
Sketch the back legs out as you see here and then start drawing out the long tail. Draw the nails on the back feet, and then finish the front arm lining.
STEP 6.
You are already almost done with this tutorial, which means it's time to finish up the body design. Sketch out the remaining shape and style of the fairy like dragon tail, and then draw the wing like frills at the end of Night Fury's wings. Add detailing and definition to the tail, and then move to the next drawing step.
STEP 7.
Draw in the detailing style of the dragon wings and be sure to make them bigger then the dragon's frame. Add minor detailing, and then move to the last drawing step.
STEP 8.
Finish off your dragon by adding an arch line for the back and then define the wings. Erase all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one to prepare your drawing for color.
STEP 9.
When you're done the character from "How to Train Your Dragon" should come out looking like the one you see here. Grab your dark colored pencil, crayon, paint, or marker and start shading in the dragon. That does it for me and for this lesson on "how to draw Night Fury, step by step". Neutral but a natural Kitsune colour, hmmm... You could always use the colours that you gave the evil Kitsune, but switch the colours... So it would be White with black markings... You can look at my Kitsunes for some help, if you want, you know Orange, brown and white... Or Red, brown and white? XD Leave a reply
