It's now time for a tutorial on a really beautiful tree that can grown, and cared for right on your table in any room of your house. This tree gained major popularity when appearing in the movie “The Karate Kid”. It was the first training that Daniel-son received from Mr. Miyagi, without him even knowing what he had learned. Of course I'm talking about when Daniel was in trouble and Mr. Miyagi invited him in his quarters while he was trimming a small Japanese spruce tree. This tutorial is going to teach you how to sketch that very same tree. So, without further ado, let's learn “how to draw a Bonsai tree, step by step”. The history of the Bonsai dates back to China over a thousand years ago. Then, this plant was called a “pun-sai”, and these plants where grown as single trees in a decorative pot. The trunks of the early Bonsai tree had a real twisted appearance making the tree look almost deformed to a point. The interesting thing is, a Bonsai isn't grown looking beautiful. It isn't until the purchaser or grower, prunes the tree that it starts taking it's amazing unique shape. As you know the Chinese culture have lots of myths and superstitions, and myths about the Bonsai seem to make the tree a desirable plant today. Japan adopted the Bonsai into their culture between 1185-1333, during the Kamakura period. They incorporated Bonsai tress with Zen Buddhism. I have always loved the concept of the Bonsai tree since I was a little girl. I plan on buying one sometime in the future and structure the tree into my own landscaped concept. The Bonsai is also a very good stress reliever, and solver of problems. Many people turn to sculpting these plants to release negative energy, and the everyday stresses of life. There is an inscription written in an ancient scroll that speaks of the Bonsai and says; “To appreciate and find pleasure in curiously curved potted trees is to love deformity”. I think you will love this tutorial on “how to draw a Bonsai tree, step by step”. The steps are pretty simple, and the instructions are easy to follow and read. Don't go away gang because I still have more lessons to upload very shortly. Peace out and happy drawing!

How to Draw a Bonsai Tree

how to draw a bonsai tree step 1

STEP 1.

Drawing a Bonsai tree can be extremely fun, or incredibly hard. It all depends on the type of tree you want. Remember, the Bonsai is a landscape creation meaning no Bonsai looks the same. Start by drawing out a rectangular shape for the base or pot that this Asian tree will sit in. Next draw the shape of the trunk, and then the two circular shapes for the foliage of the tree. Try and treat this sketch like your actually designing your own Bonsai with a pruning tool.

STEP 2.

Here you will start sketching out the very dense looking foliage of the tree top, as well as the small branches. Once complete, you can move to the next step.

STEP 3.

Continue sketching out more of the Bonsai foliage, and then start shaping out the branches and then the top of the trunk. Notice how you can start seeing the shape of the trunk and how it branches off into limbs.

STEP 4.

You will now sketch out the complete shape of the trunk and then add in some detailing and definition as you can see here. Bonsai trees have what seems like, exposed roots. Sketch out the bottom of the plant as you see it here.

STEP 5.

Now you will sketch out the top part of the wooden pot that it is growing in. You can also choose to draw a circular pot, or any other traditional shaped Asian container.

STEP 6.

For your last drawing step, finish drawing the bottom of the base and then draw the legs that is attached to the wooden container. Erase all the shapes and guidelines that you drew in step one to clean up your drawing, and to prepare it for color.
