For a while now I have been wondering what it would be like to draw a coral reef. I began sketching out my idea or version of a coral reef when I received a request for one by a member of Dragoart. The bottom of the sea is a beautiful place, and if I were a mermaid, then I am sure my existence would be filled with rich colors, and visually amazing things. I will now give you my interpretation on "how to draw a coral reef step by step". Coral reefs are incredible ecosystems that live at the bottom of oceans. Even though they only cover about one percent of the earths surface, they still provide essential elements for sea creatures as well as being a home to over twenty five percent of different types of fish species. Did you know that there are five hundred million people that depend on what the coral reef provides for their food supply as well as lively hood? With the inevitability drawing near, coral reefs are being destroyed all over the world. Coral reefs are what you call "aragonite" structures that are created from living organisms. In most cases reefs are made up of stony corals, and colonial cnidarians. Cnidaria are divisions that have over nine thousand animal species of aquatic life. As the years progress coral reefs are starting to become a thing of the past. That's why so many oceanographers and scientists are working hard to stop the extinction of coral reefs. If we as people cannot protect our planet, than we are just asking for major trouble. Once an ecosystem is extinct, it causes a domino effect for all life forms including humans as we know it. Did you know that if it wasn't for corals controlling how much carbon dioxide is in the water, all living things on earth would be affected. It is the work of "coral polyps" that turns carbon dioxide in the water into a limestone shell, which prevents too much CB in the water. Not only do coral reefs protect us, they also protectors of coast lines by stopping or slowing down strong currents and waves before they reach our shorelines. Because of this, these reefs are also called "barrier reefs". They help provide a barrier to separate the ocean from the shore. Did you know that if there was no coral reefs, the state of Florida would be under water? Now that is a fact that can be read up on if you would like to learn more on how you can save coral reefs from extinction. In the mean time celebrate the reef by learning "how to draw a coral reef step by step". You can also draw in your own pretty fish, and other underwater life forms to customize the drawing to your liking. I will be back later folks so sty tuned. Peace out, and happy drawing!

How to Draw a Coral Reef

how to draw a coral reef step 1

STEP 1.

This is going to be wicked fun to draw watch and see. Start by draw three sets of horizontal lines for your ocean floor. You will then draw the mountain like mound that you see here and then draw a small circle shape. Once that is done draw the guidelines for the different types of coral you will be drawing.

STEP 2.

You will start by drawing out the octopuses legs and or tentacles. Once this is done you can move to the right side and begin sketching out the shape of your first coral of this reef. I chose to draw the pipe coral, because it reminds me of SpongeBob's dwellings.

STEP 3.

You will now finish sketching out the pip coral and begin drawing the bamboo like coral you see just below the pipe coral. Once that is done you can start sketching out the beginning of the ocean floor by adding some rocks and detail to the sand or surface.

STEP 4.

As you can see your coral reef is coming together just beautifully. What you will do now is draw the shape of the mountain shaped rock, and then add some sea critters on there like a starfish, and more different types of corals. You can draw some spongy coral, or different cup corals too if you like. Once that is done draw the long wispy shape of some seagrass as you see in the background.

STEP 5.

In this step you will start sketching out the head and face of that cute octopus you see here. Next draw more underwater foliage as well as add some detailing to the bottom of the ocean floor. Once you are done here, you can move to the next and last drawing step to finish off your coral reef drawing.

STEP 6.

I know I said that this was your last step but, I had to say that to keep you guys moving further without hesitation XD. You will now finish draw out the right pipe coral you see and then add some detailing and definition to the ocean floor as well as to that dirt mound to the lower right hand corner. Once you are done you can then proceed onto the last drawing step.

STEP 7.

All you will do here is detail the pipe coral and draw in a small cute little fish. You can start erasing all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one to clean up your ocean.

STEP 8.

You are now done learning "how to draw a coral reef". Color it in using vibrate shades, and that is it. You did an awesome job, and now you can hang up your coral reef on the wall, or tape it to your fish tank to use as a neat background for your fish.
