Description: Okay, is everyone ready for yet another Greek mythology tutorial? Good, because this one is going to be on how to draw a Hippocampus. What is this creature you ask? Well these mythological creatures are supposed to be half horse and half fish, almost like a sea horse but way more advanced. The front part of this creature has a horses head, neck, chest, and front legs and hooves. When you get to the middle of this being it has a coiled up scaly mermaid like hindquarter. The tail resembles that of a whale or dolphin, and the mane is fin like, they were often covered with green scales. These beast supposedly where created by Poseidon, the God of horses and the sea. Poseidon is often described at times riding a sea like chariot that is being pulled by a hippocampus; this was later made into a sport with Poseidon in ancient descriptions of this sea and horse god. Now, the hippocamps were said to be able to live in fresh and salt water. The ancients believed that these creatures were the adult-form of the fish we call the "sea-horse". The Trevi Fountain in Rome shows the Roman sea god Neptune standing in his realm while hippocamps dance and frolic in the water at his feet. This beautiful display is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, measuring 85 feet high and 65 feet wide. Like Poseidon, Neptune was also worshipped by the Romans as a horse god. Now a days you see this mythical creature in fantasy computer and console games like Final Fantasy 3, Dungeons & Dragons, and the video game Age of mythology, the “sea horse” was also used in the stories of Harry Potter. Greeks and Romans of today use images of these animals in their art work most often seen in paintings and they are even seen on the roman coin. I think that the Greeks have some interesting and unusual creatures of myth. All the different types of animals and beings from Greek mythology truly do fascinate me. This tutorial will show you how to draw a hippocampus step by step. The instructions are awesome because I give you a few extra tips on drawing this creature. Well, have fun with this one and if you get a chance type in “The Trevi Fountain” in your search engine to see the beautiful display in Rome.
