How to Draw Duckshow to draw ducks
how to draw ducks step 1

Step 1.

First it is important to get proportions down correctly by breaking down the ducks into smaller shapes. Their bodies are very rounded, so it's easy to get most of it down using a few ovals. Compare this to a reference if you aren't sure if it looks quite right.

Step 2.

Now you can begin to refine your basic shapes into what looks more like a duck. Add the nostrils, tweak the eyes, form their toes and add more shape to their wings.

Step 3.

Once you have a good form down it is time to add details such as feathers. Be sure to pay attention to what direction they go in and how long they are. Feathers on the body will be shorter, avoid drawing too many to keep them looking soft. Note how the feathers are suggested with only a few lines on the white duck's chest. You can shade the mallard's head more to show how dark and shiny it is, as well as add more definition to the feathers on its chest and wings that have darker coloration.

Step 4.

Now you're finished! Feel free to take it a step or two further by adding some color and shading.

There are many types of ducks, but the ones you are probably most familiar are the domestic white ones, seen on farms, and mallard drakes with the green heads that live in the wild. This tutorial will introduce "how to draw ducks" with one flying, and one just standing.
