This tutorial is going to teach you how to draw the Japanese Snow Monkey or the Japanese Macaque. These are very interesting and beautiful animals that are found in Japan. If you don’t know exactly what makes these monkeys so unique I will tell you. For starters, they are the only monkeys to live in such extreme cold weather living 41- 31 degrees north of the equator that would make them the only monkey living that far to the north in the entire world. Living on hills throughout the forests, in the highlands and mountains, can always enjoy soaking in a hot spring that is usually not to far from where they live during the intense weather of the winter season. The majority of snow monkeys in existence can be found on the southern island of Yaku Shima, the reason being is that this island contains more subtropical plants and a heavily leaved evergreen forest which make this particular location ideal for the macaque. These monkeys have a face much like a human, it is bare, reddish in color, and their eyes are very expressive. Their tails are stubby and short, the coats are heavy, dense, and furry to keep the chill off and the colors ranger from brown to grey or even a mix between the two. The interesting part is that when the summer months come thy will shed off half the fur so their coats will be much lighter. This species are medium sized hefty animals that range around 2-4 feet long and weigh roughly between 25-70 pounds. They also move around on all fours unless they are having something in their hands, and half a thumb that is fully opposable. Instead of tribes, they live in troops of 20-30 at a time and is led by a dominate male. Their diets consist of fruits, bark, seeds, different types of flowers and leaves, and on occasion crabs and bird eggs. They gather most of their food on the ground and at times sits up in trees to feed on the leaves and bark. The Japanese snow monkey has been a part of Japanese history and art for centuries. Japanese people are very fond of their monkeys and will continue to make sure that they will never have the threat of extinction knocking on their door. Like I said at the beginning of this introduction, I will show you in detail how to draw one of these fascinating Japanese snow monkeys. The instructions have step by step sketching details. I enjoyed drawing my own sketch of this animal, and I know you will too.

How to Draw a Monkey

how to draw a japanese snow monkey step 1

STEP 1.

Okay in this first step what you will do is draw out the guidelines for the monkey. Right now it looks like some form of robot, but it will all take form in later steps. First draw an egg shape circle attached to a tiny line. Then from the line draw another line that goes straight across to form shoulders, the whole shape should look like a cannon. Inside the cannon shape draw another egg shaped circle, draw another curved line that comes from the end of the cannon shape and goes all the way down and under to form the back and the butt of the snow monkeys body. Sketch in two cow bell shapes for the hands and you can them move to the next step.

STEP 2.

The snow monkey at this point is starting to look like an Eskimo wearing a big warm coat. You will be drawing the same exact thing on your sketch. Start off by sketching the outer shape of the snow monkey. As you can see the coat on the monkey is fairly thick, that is why it resembles an Eskimo. After you sketch out the top, go around to the lower front and sketch in the front part of the body including the hands, tail, and feet. At the end of this step you should have a full looking frame for the monkey.

STEP 3.

This step is pretty short and sweet. What you will be doing is sketching in the face and hands. Remember the Japaneses snow monkey's face resembles a human face, so the eyes and nose should be symmetrical. Lightly sketch a line going straight down the middle of the face to help guide you to draw eyes that line up perfectly. shape the face of the monkey and draw the lining for the nose. After you finish the face move down to the right and sketch in the hands and fingers. This should be easy because the hands are a closed fist.

STEP 4.

This is the step where you will be fluffing up the fur all around the monkeys body. As you can see it looks like he is actually wearing a winter coat and the only thing showing is the face and hands. Pretty strange huh. Like I said before, they only have coats like this in the winter months. During the summer all that fur is ahead right off and they look much more thinned out. After you lightly sketch the hair all over the body on the snow monkey move to the final step.

STEP 5.

This is your final step. What you want to do here to make your monkey look like this, is erase all the guidelines that you drew in step 1. Clean up your sketch from the pencil lines that may have grazed the paper when you where drawing your sketch. After that all that you have to do is color him in. You should have an image that looks like the one you see here.
