How to Draw CHAPPiE

1

Begin by making the guides for the head and torso of Chappie like you see here. You will also need to sketch in the facial guidelines.

2

Using the head guide sketch out the definition of Chappie's robotic head.

3

We will now draw in the beginnings of the head's detail which is inner lining forming raised parts of the robotic head/face.

4

We will now draw in the visor for the helmet along with the front plate for the area that will be the mouth or grill. Add detailed lining and then proceed to step five.

5

Up next, we will simply add the flat styled antenna on each side of Chappie's head, then draw a thin line to form the actual glass area for Chappie's eyes. Draw in two small squares for the eyes and an empty space for the mouth.

6

We will now work on the upper body. Start with the straight lined shoulders, then draw in the pieces that look like tubing that are positioned vertically on the shoulders. Add the neck line and then draw the front plate for the chest.

7

We will proceed on and sketch out the arms. There are layers of rippled metal that makes up the arm design. Finish the detailing to the front of Chappie's body which is on both sides of the flat middle chest plate.

8

And finally, we will finish things off by drawing the plates on the throat area, and then sketch in some fine lining to the front of the body and on the shoulder flaps or plates like you see here. Once all the work is done, you can begin erasing thos

Here he is, friendly Chappie. Now you can color him in and show folks who you just created.

Description: This lesson is really exciting because it is on a robotic character from an upcoming movie called Chappie. Today, I will be showing you how to draw Chappie, step by step. The film is directed by the same guy who brought us District 9 and Elysium, two films I really enjoyed a lot and his name is Neill Blomkamp. Anyways, the whole story revolves around Chappie and how he became a robot who would change the way people look at robots. As the story goes, society is put in place by authoritative robot police. The people try and rebel against these mechanical police by taking one of their own and tweaking him to obey regular folk. In the process Chappie turns into a robot child that has feelings and can think for himself. One of the cool things is that Chappie is being played by Sharlto Copley, the same guy who played Wikus Van De Merwe in District 9 and Agent Kruger in Elysium. Anyways, I didn't make Chappie to complex to tackle because I know he will be tried by lots of artists. So go ahead and have fun drawing Chappie.
