Everyone likes pirate ships and pirates right? Well because I like pirates too I decided to do a lesson on how to draw Jolly Roger skull and cutlasses step by step. Does anyone know what the phrase “Jolly Roger” means anyway? For me, I didn’t know if that was the name of a person or a ship or what. After some research I came up with some kind of answer to the age old question. The name “Jolly Roger” comes from the word joli rouge which means “pretty red”. The word was derived from the French and it was used to describe the bloody banners or flags that were used by the early pirates of our history. Pirates used these flags to provoke and cause fear, and terror, of their future victims that they were to prey on. The Jolly Rogers were made from a combination of skeletons, bleeding hearts, daggers, swords, and colored backgrounds like white, red and black. The flag that we are going to learn how to draw today belonged to the famous Jack Rackham or “Calico Jack” and it was only because of the design of his flag that he became so famous. That and the fact that he had two very well known female pirates at his employ that went by the names of Anne Bonny and Mary Read. The reason why I chose to do this particular pirate flag design is because it is the most popular. Not only will you learn how to draw the Jolly Roger design, you will also learn how to draw cutlasses as well. A cutlass is a sword commonly used by pirates back in the days when the waters had been flooded with nothing but piracy. Learning how to draw Jolly Roger skull and cutlasses step by step will provide you will a skill that you can carry with your for as long as you want it. I hope you have fun and I will be back with one more lesson so stay tuned.
