How to Draw a Balinese Mask, Bali Mask

Step 1.

Here in this first step you will need to draw two circles and then draw out the guide shape for the snout and then an oblong shape for the mouth guide.

Step 2.

Next, begin sketching out the shape of the nose, then draw in the upper lip or gum line.

Step 3.

Draw the shapes of each eye, then draw a smaller circle for the pupils. Add the eyelids, then sketch in the nostril holes and detailing to the tip of the nose.

Step 4.

You might want to start slowing down a bit because now you will be drawing the odd shaped large teeth for this Bali mask. As you can see the fangs are the biggest and the are pointed outward and away from each other. Add the detailing along the gums above each tooth, then draw the smile points for each cheek.

Step 5.

Now you can use that oblong guide shape you made in step one to draw out the large wide open mouth. The gum line should be trimmed along the edges of the mouth, and you also have to draw in the curled pieces of hair.

Step 6.

Add the lids and some of the brows like so, you will then draw a cone or leaf like shape between the two eyes.

Step 7.

Next up, draw in the back teeth which is the molars, then add the dimpling to each tooth as well. Next, add defining lines inside the mouth which will also be part of the masks design. Add detailing to the hair, then proceed to step eight.

Step 8.

This is actually your last drawing step. All you have to do is draw in the spiked cones that crown the head of this Balinese mask. Don't forget to take your time so each one comes out neatly drawn. Add detailing inside the each cone, then erase the mistakes you may have made.

Step 9.

That's it, this drawing lesson is over. As you can see the line art should look great and it should also be ready to color in.

So here is an interesting mask that I first thought was of one of those dragons that the Chinese use in their celebration for Chinese New Year, but this mask is actually Indonesian. Up next we will explore this tutorial to try and learn "how to draw a Balinese mask", step by step. I know there must be some of you that wanted to see a tut like this on Dragoart so here it is today. I actually had a lot of fun making this mask because it was not only a challenge, it is also a very beautiful piece of work. I have been a fond fan of all types of Asian inspired art and this one is no exception. The style of the mask and or face sort of looks like a dragon, but it also looks like a man or beast. Trying to figure out what these masks are used for is like trying to read stereo instructions. I do know that the Balinese mask is used in dance, as well as in an aid to rid evil spirits, as well as other spiritual rituals. People of Indonesia and Bali have a religion called Balinese Hinduism which is pretty common nowadays worldwide. Anyways, enjoy this lesson on drawing a Bali mask, and I will prepare my next exciting tutorial. Peace out people.
