Velociraptor is a prehistoric reptile that lived over 80 million years ago, right around the later part of the Cretaceous Period. They were one of the fastest and one of the ferocious dinosaurs around. Even though they lived millions of years ago, the Velociraptor still was believed to be one of the smartest reptile species. They used coordination and cooperation with the other raptors in the pack to take down their prey. The word Velociraptor actually means “swift thief”. The prehistoric creature gained more popularity in the movie Jurassic Park. A lot of information about the velociraptor is talked about in this flick which gives you a very vivid mental picture on how brutal this beast really was. Almost every dinosaur has a tool on their body that assists them for their hunting needs, in the raptors case not only were they fast and strategic, but they also possessed a long hook shape claw on each hind foot that is used to rip apart their prey. Out of all the dinosaurs that existed, the velociraptor is one of my all time favorites to draw. Though growing up as a kid there wasn’t many dinosaur cartoons to choose from, I often read how cavemen had drawings of them in their small living holes. It kinda makes you think if dinosaurs shared the same world with the cavemen or is it just an assumption made by man. Speaking of man, did you know that the raptor was actually only up to the knee of man, and that they had feathers all over them? They kinda looked like over sized mean looking chickens. I am going to teach you how to draw a velociraptor with 9 easy steps. The tutorial is simple enough to follow, which will make it easier to learn to draw other dinosaurs. Well that’s all I have to say about this prehistoric animal, it’s back to the drawing board for me, until next time fellow artist.

How to Draw a Velociraptor Dinosaur

how to draw a velociraptor dinosaur step 1

STEP 1.

In this first step what you want to do is draw two circles, with the smallest on top. This is the guide you will use for the head and the body. Next, draw in the connecting line for the neck, and then draw a long guide for the raptor's tail.

STEP 2.

Now what you do next is sketch out the raptor's head which slopes down forming the back of the neck. When that is done you can start sketching out both the top and bottom pats of the mouth. Be sure to define the temporal bone for the jaw, and add that tissue that stretches on the inside corner of the mouth.

STEP 3.

Now that the head is drawn, you can get start sketching the front part of the neck, and then draw in the top and bottom row of sharp teeth. Draw the tongue, eye, definition on the snout, and then sketch in some texture detailing for the surface of the raptor's jaw, head, and snout.

STEP 4.

Proceed with the continence of sketching the raptor's upper body. These dinosaur's are agile reptiles which means their bodies are lean. Once the upper part of the body is drawn you can draw in the first arm, and then the clawed fingers or talons.

STEP 5.

It is now time to move onto getting the rest of the dinosaur's body length drawn out. You can do this draw continuing the lining from the end of the back, then draw downward until a long tail is formed. Sketch out the raptor's thigh, leg, and foot, as well as the retractable clawed toe or nail.

STEP 6.

This is pretty much the last drawing step as far as drawing out the body goes. All you have to do here is draw in the other inner leg and foot like so, and then draw the other arm and clawed fingers. Sketch the detailing for the nails or claws and then carry on to the last step.

STEP 7.

As you can see the raptor that you drew is looking real good. To add some definition to this dinosaur, all you have to do is lightly sketch in all the texture detailing to the Velociraptor skin. This includes the creases on the toes, ankle, knees, thighs, and fingers. Don't forget to add the body detailing for muscle definition before leaving this step as well as the clean up of the drawing to prepare it for color.

STEP 8.

Your done. The finished sketch should resemble the image above. You can add your own personal touches to the drawing and color it if you wish to do so. I hope you learned something new, and I also hope you had fun.
