My tutorial is featuring Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, also known as El Canelo (meaning Cinnamon due to his hair and skin complextion), an undefeated Mexican professional boxer in the Light Middleweight division. He is the current WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine Light Middleweight Champion. He is promoted by Osca De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions (Wikipedia Notes). STEP 8.

Look closely at how the lines of his hair and strokes flow downward within the guidelines. Draw those lovely curls and waves. I will have some TIPS on how to get that shine in hair. Remember, patience is your best friend because with it, you'll be able to complete your drawing.

STEP 9.

This step is a bit challenging because of the fold details on the boxing glove. Don't make these folds straight. Make them a bit crooked..

STEP 10.

Last but not least, draw in his neck, shoulders, and part of his chest. If you haven't already, you can now erase your guidelines. The lines you couldn't erase, go ahead and blend them in if you will be shading your drawing.

STEP 11.

I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.

STEP 12.

Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see extra shadow lines for shading (they need to be very light). Your lines don't need to be exactly like mines...just similar. Do not hesitate to erase certain areas like the eyes or nose if they don't line up. Take you kneaded eraser. If you want to, dab off the dark outer outline with your kneaded eraser for a more realistic look as you shade. Shading transition from dark to light (or visa versa) should be smooth... no harsh lines. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.

STEP 13.

I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.

STEP 14.

Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump.

STEP 15.

Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.

STEP 16.

This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium to dark gray to his face, hair, boxer gloves, neck and chest areas. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.

STEP 17.

What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a small blending stump called a tortillon (since it won't leave lines and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil) on his skin. Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (like his eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, side of face, mouth, hair, boxer gloves, etc.). I took a soft tissue to smooth and lighten highlighted areas. I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas.

STEP 18.

I used my 9B pencil for the shaded areas on his face, filled in his hair more, darkened the shadows on his boxer gloves and chest. I took my kneaded eraser and lightened the laces on the glove and highlighted areas on his face.

STEP 19.

Drawing like this is a gradual buildup. I keep sketching, blending and sketching some more. This time, I first blended the pencil sketches with my toritllon to give a smooth transition. I added more dark tones and details to his hair, face, and chest with a 9B graphite pencil. I also took a soft tissue to lighten up his skin area around the highlights. I darkened his eye whites.

STEP 20.

Here I added lighter hair strands & curls from looking at the reference picture. I also smoothed his face, hair, neck and body by blurring with my digital program. I darkened his neck shadow, face and t-shirt with my airbrush tool in my digital/drawing program. Also a background was added. After the background for a dramatic and realistic effect, I white-lined the outline of his face, neck, and back of neck. Also I added light/white hair whips at the edge of his head outline. I am closing out now. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on El Canelo, undefeated in the boxing industry. All of you have been wonderful and it has been a great pleasure to do this tutorial with you. Please fav, comment, and show your love here. And I will definitely reply back soon or eventually. Love, peace, happiness, success, and more beautiful days to ya! *hug* *blowkiss*
