To draw the metal head, Zakk Wylde, we should first sketch in some basic guide line. Using a 2H or harder pencil, lightly sketch in a stick figure shape such as this one. Sketch in a horizontal line for the guitar so that we know the basic hand placement. These lines do not have to be perfect, since they will be erased later on.
Next, we should sketch in the basic human form. Doing this will ensure that the figure is proportionate when we go to apply clothing later on. You do not need to include details such as facial feature or fingers. These lines are just guides as well. Wylde has a thick build, like a Viking warrior, so keep that in mind when sketching the figure.
Let's begin drawing the upper part of the face. This is a near profile shot of the face, so only a small portion of the left eyebrow should be visible. His right eye should be looking down at his guitar. Give him a few small wrinkles around his eyes and on the side of his nose. Draw the ear near the middle of the head. His lower face will be covered by his beard.
One of Zakk's signature looks is he long, thick, dirty beard. The whiskers should be relatively short on the side of the face, but they get very long at the chin. They are clumped together almost forming dreadlocks. They should be flying all over the place as he bangs his head.
Wylde has long, thick, blonde hair. The strands of hair should be going all over the place just like his beard. The hair should be messy and wild. Have fun with it!
Draw his right arm bent at a 90 degree angle. He has thick, somewhat muscular arms and it should show. Draw a leather wrist cuff covering most of his lower forearm. On his hand, his thumb should not be visible as it is tucked behind the hand. His index finger should be partially tucked under as well, as he is holding a guitar pick. Draw a ring on his middle finger. Be sure to draw his knuckles, fingernails, and wrinkles on his knuckles. You can also draw a few large veins on the back of his hand.
The guitar can be a tad tricky. First, start by drawing the shape of the neck and the head. The bottom of the neck should continue beyond the right hand.
Next, start to draw the body of the Gibson brand guitar (which is Zakk's preferred manufacturer). Use the base of the neck of the guitar as a guide for where to begin. The top of the body should have a curved tips, and the guitar should be fat and round on the backside of the right arm.
Add more detail to the guitar such as a the knobs and keys. Draw the strings and frets up the neck. Draw a massive strap adorned with metal rivets holding the guitar as it hangs from his shoulder.
Zakk's guitar always has a large bull's-eye painted on it that is centered beneath his right hand. Use a circular protractor to help you draw the circles.
Now draw his left arm and hand. Most of his upper arm will be covered by his body. Draw another wrist cuff on his forearm. The fingers of his hand should be partly spread out and some fingers should be bent as they press on the strings. Draw a couple more rings on his fingers.
Zakk often wears a leather vest when he performs. It should have a V shaped neck, but it should be unbuttoned and hang loosely on his body. Draw the seams of the vest and the metal buttons.
Draw the muscles of his neck and bare chest. His pecks should be more prominent than stomach muscles.
Finish the sketch by drawing his legs spread wide apart as he has a solid foot stance with his guitar resting between his legs. Draw a few horizontal pant wrinkles near his inner thighs.
Now that we are done penciling the image, we can ink it using a Micron marker or a brush and India ink. Carefully go over each line with patience and be sure not to accidentally ink any unneeded guide lines. Use a ruler and protractor to help you with the guitar. When the ink is dry, erase your pencil marks with a kneaded eraser.
You can add more depth to the image by giving it shadow. Establish your light source and use black ink or a fat tipped black marker to shade the opposite side of the figure and every clothing wrinkle and fold. Also shade the underside of his hair nearest his scalp.
If you need to make any corrections, use white ink or opaque white paint. You can also use it to add highlights if needed. And that's how you draw the head banging guitarist, Zakk Wylde! Draw till your fingers bleed, my friends!
