To draw the Rolling Stones rock icon, Keith Richards, we should first sketch in some basic guide line. Using a 2H or harder pencil, lightly sketch in a stick figure shape such as this on. Be sure to include the basic shape of the guitar so we know proper hand placement. These lines do not have to be perfect, since they will be erased later on.
Next, we should sketch in the basic human form. Doing this will ensure that the figure is proportionate when we go to apply clothing later on. You do not need to include details such as facial feature or fingers. These lines are just guides as well. Richards is very thin, so keep that in mind when drawing the figure.
Let's begin drawing the face. Since this is almost a profile shot of the face, you only need to draw the right eye, but a small portion of the left eyebrow and eyelid should be visible behind the bridge of the nose. Draw the nose and mouth. Draw the contours of the chin and jaw line with a few wrinkles underneath them. It seems like Richards has always been old (even when he was young), so draw numerous wrinkles on the face, primarily around the mouth and eyes.
Richards has wild, yet thin, brown hair. To make things more interesting, give him a head band with a large knot at the front. The back of the headband should be covered up by hair. The hair on the top of the head should be standing upright.
Next, draw the torso. Have him wearing an unbuttoned shirt with an undershirt. The over-shirt should have a lot of vertical wrinkles on it. Don't forget to draw the buttons.
Now draw the shoulders and arms. Have the right sleeve of the shirt rolled up above the elbow with a lot of wrinkles on it. The left sleeve can be rolled down and unbuttoned. Richards is known for accessorizing his wardrobe, so give him some bracelets on his wrists.
Draw the right hand with the fingers curled under as if grasping a guitar pick or perhaps plucking a string. Give him a ring on his finger as well. The fingers of the left hand should be curled around what will be the location of the guitar neck. The left fingers should all be bent as if pressing down on strings.
The guitar can be a tad tricky. First, start by drawing the shape of the neck. The bottom of the neck should continue beyond the right hand. You may have to erase some pencil marks from previous steps in order to draw the guitar neck.
Next, start to draw the body of the guitar. Use the base of the neck of the guitar as a guide for where to begin. The top of the body should have a curved tips, and the guitar should be fat and round on the backside of the right arm. Again, you may have to erase some marks from previous steps.
Add more detail to the guitar such as a the knobs and power wire. Draw the strings up the neck and the shoulder strap which should attach to the top point of the guitar. Draw the frets up the neck and some rivets on the body. Draw a second curved point at the top of the guitar body.
Add in a shoulder strap which should connect to the upper curve of the guitar body. If you need to add in a small portion of shirt or pants behind the guitar, do so.
Now that we are done penciling the image, we can ink it using a Micron marker or a brush and India ink. Carefully go over each line with patience and be sure not to accidentally ink any unneeded guide lines. When the ink is dry, erase your pencil marks with a kneaded eraser.
You can add more depth to the image by giving it shadow. Establish your light source and use black ink or a fat tipped black marker to shade the opposite side of the figure and every clothing wrinkle and fold.
If you need to make any corrections, use white ink or opaque white paint. You can also use it to add highlights if needed. And that's how you draw Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones! Thanks for tagging along!
