To draw the rock icon, David Gilmore, we should first sketch in some basic guide line. Using a 2H or harder pencil, lightly sketch in a stick figure shape such as this on. Be sure to include the basic shape of the guitar so we know proper hand placement. These lines do not have to be perfect, since they will be erased later on.
Next, we should sketch in the basic human form. Doing this will ensure that the figure is proportionate when we go to apply clothing later on. You do not need to include details such as facial feature or fingers. These lines are just guides as well. Gilmore is thin and fit, so keep that in mind when drawing the figure.
Let's begin drawing the face. Make sure the eyes fall on the center eye line and that they are looking down at his guitar. His eyebrows should be furrowed as if in deep concentration. Draw the nose and mouth. Gilmore has very full lips, so be sure to draw a full lower lip. Draw the contours of the chin and face.
Gilmore has long, straight, dark brown hair. The strands should start at the top of the head and fall down either side of the face, and in the back as well. Have the tips blowing in the air slightly so as to add a sense of movement to the image.
Next, draw the torso. Have him wearing a form fitting tee shirt, which means that there will be numerous wrinkles stretching horizontally across the torso.
Draw the shoulders and arms. Draw the short tee shirt sleeves covering the shoulders. Both arms should be bent at a 90 degree angle, but the left forearm requires foreshortening.
The fingers of the right hand should be curled inward, as if holding a guitar pick. The fingers of the left hand should be curled what will be the neck of the guitar. The left fingers should all be bent differently, to indicate that they are pressing on different strings.
The guitar can be a tad tricky. First, start by drawing the shape of the neck. The bottom of the neck should stop just above the right hand. You may have to erase some pencil marks from previous steps in order to draw the guitar neck.
Next, draw the body of the guitar. Use the base of the neck of the guitar as a guide for where to begin. The top of the body should have two curved tips, and the guitar should be fat and round on the backside of the right arm. Again, you may have to erase some marks from previous steps.
Add more detail to the guitar such as a the knobs and power wire. Draw the strings up the neck and the shoulder strap which should attach to the top point of the guitar.
Now that we are done penciling the image, we can ink it using a Micron marker or a brush and India ink. Carefully go over each line with patience and be sure not to accidentally ink any unneeded guide lines. When the ink is dry, erase your pencil marks with a kneaded eraser.
You can add more depth to the image by giving it shadow. Establish your light source and use black ink or a fat tipped black marker to shade the opposite side of the figure and every clothing wrinkle and fold. Since he has dark brown hair, feel free to add heavy shadow to the hair.
If you need to make any corrections, use white ink or opaque white paint. You can also use it to add highlights if needed. And that's how you draw David Gilmore from Pink Floyd! Shine on you crazy diamonds!!
