STEP 6.

Examine and notice how her nose appears in relation to the guidelines. Draw in her nose.

STEP 7.

Since there are more details in her mouth and her face is at a different angle, I made this separate. Sketch in her mouth.

STEP 8.

Now draw in the profile of her face, her cheek, jawline, and her ear.

STEP 9.

Now look closely at how the lines of her hair flow with the guidelines. Take your time. Patience is your best friend because with it, you'll be able to complete your drawing. If you haven't already, you can now erase your guidelines. The lines you couldn't erase, go ahead and blend them in if you will be shading your drawing.

STEP 10.

I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.

STEP 11.

I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.

STEP 12.

Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump.

STEP 13.

Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.

STEP 14.

EYELASH STROKES! Here's a little tip to help draw those lovely lashes. Yes, those pesky little lashes that look like spider legs are drawn a certain way and they taper (you can add thickness to the roots as you finish stroking them in). The picture to this step shows what direction to stroke. And you have the freedom to twist your paper any angle that makes your drawing easier.

STEP 15.

Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Take you kneaded eraser and dab off the shadow outlines or dark lines with your kneaded eraser for a more realistic look as you shade. Shading transition from dark to light (or visa versa) should be smooth... no harsh lines. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.

STEP 16.

I did a little bit more shading in the hair and darkened other areas with my 9b Pencil before applying pastel.

STEP 17.

This is the first start with the pastel application. If you do the whole picture in a pencil sketch, this is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium & dark gray to her face, hair, and neck. Leaving white spaces in the hair saves you from erasing a lot for a highlight look. Looks like a mess, but that's how a some beginning projects will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.

STEP 18.

Here I used my blending stump to "draw" in more lines, add more shading to her hair and face. The areas I needed to whiten, I used a kneaded eraser (on her lips and under her eyebrows.

STEP 19.

I sketched in more shading into her cheek lines and darkened her eyebrows and eye mascara with my 9B and 0.7mm pencils. With the 0.7mm mechanical pencil (HB lead), I defined her short hair. I did a lot of smoothing with a small tortillon at her cheek bone, jawline, and neck.

STEP 20.

Drawing like this is a gradual buildup. I keep sketching, blending and sketching some more. This time, I added more dark tones and details to her hair, face, and neck with a 9B graphite pencil. For fine details in her hairline, eyebrows, and eyes, I used a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. I've also blended with some tissue to soften her skin and smooth her hair. I added background with my photo editing program. But notice, I have not added highlights yet.

STEP 21.

This is an example on how Emeli looks without the digital blend on her skin. Basically, the shadow transition on her cheek line is not smooth. Check out the next step on how the digital blending makes a big difference. Also information on highlight application is in the next step.

STEP 22.

Here I added lots of highlights on her hair from the reference picture. You can do this with white pastel, white titanium acrylic or watercolor paint. I still darkened the outline of her face and cheek areas, along with her neckline. I got a smoother blend on her face in my digital program. I am closing out now. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on the talented Emeli Sande. All of you have been wonderful and it has been a great pleasure to do this tutorial with you. Please fav, comment, and show your love here. And I will definitely reply back soon or eventually. Love, peace, happiness, success, and more beautiful days to ya! *hug* *blowkiss*
