This is one of my original drawings by looking at a reference picture without any tool aids or scaling. Since this tutorial is about "How to Draw a Woman," I thought Katherine Pierce with her sassy and womanly ways would be the perfect picture. Nina Dobrev brilliantly plays this vixen vampire in "The Vampire Diaries," and she was a rival to Elena Gilbert, her doppelganger, for the love of Stefan. I have added a couple of tips on drawing a woman's body. I hope you will enjoy this tutorial. Please fav, show your love, and comment. Thank you all. Peace and love to you.

How to Draw a Woman, Katherine Pierce, The Vampire Diaries

how to draw a woman, katherine pierce, the vampire diaries step 1

STEP 1.

To allow for more shading steps, I've cut down the guidelines. Let me know if this works for you. With the No. 2 pencil, start lightly drawing the head & torso ovals, bisecting line, and crescent lines (for head mass). Then lightly draw lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, d. for mouth, and e. for body placement. Make sure you draw these as seen in the picture.

STEP 2.

Observe where Katherine's features appear in relation to the guidelines. Draw in her falling hair to the side, eyebrows, and eyes.

STEP 3.

Now draw in her nose, mouth, and upper chin shadow.

STEP 4.

Pay attention to the placement of forehead, cheek, jawline, chin, and neck and how they relate to the guidelines. Now draw them in.

STEP 5.

Since there are quite a few lines representing the flow of her hair, I've broken this down into some parts. Just draw lightly the left side facing you. Make sure you follow the hair lines that curve and flow.

STEP 6.

Now you can draw in the right side of her hair.

STEP 7.

Sketch in the rest of her curls, arm, jacket and camisole top.

STEP 8.

Sketch in the jacket and her curls on the other side. If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines.

STEP 9.

I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.

STEP 10.

I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.

STEP 11.

Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump

STEP 12.

Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.

STEP 13.

It is always great to shade in your drawing lightly. You can use a circular or diagonal sketching direction to shade her face, hair, jacket, and top with a 9B pencil very lightly. Use the pencil on it's side as in step 10 for a wider swath (coverage). The 0.7mm mech pencil is great for details such as refining the eyes, lips, and eyebrows (even folds in the blouse and piping in the jacket).

STEP 14.

It's amazing how your picture will look after blending with a tissue (much like this picture). Still, do not randomly rub over her eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and hair. Another thing, don't draw small. Draw on an A4 (or 8-1/2 by 11) paper size (like typing or copy paper). I use almost all the paper to draw in the head and neck so the shading areas are large enough to avoid important features.

STEP 15.

Here is the finished product. The darkness in her hair (all over), shadows on her face ), and neck are darkened with the 9B Graphite Pencil. Adding the background and blending it makes this contrast rich and bold for our vixen vampire played by Nina Dobrev! I have some more steps with a few tips on drawing a woman's body.

STEP 16.

It's great to practice drawing realistic figures of women (young, old, short, tall, skinny, large, normal). This picture shows some areas to focus on. When drawing a woman's shoulder, they slope and they are not angular. Notice how her body spans from her feet to her hips. Her arms naturally have a curve to the...they are not straight up and down while down. The 2nd picture shows the back, bottom, and back of legs do not make a straight line. Notice how her buttocks touch the line but the rest of her body doesn't, it slants forward. And when drawing the bust, use a rounded curve. The 3rd picture shows her back. Notice how the shoulders slope down and her buttocks isn't in a straight line. Check out her hips...there's some meat on them. Notice how it interacts with her sport pants.

STEP 17.

There are two types of stick figures in this tutorial. The first is structural, like a skeleton, holding the flesh together. The second is an action stick figure, showing graceful or flowing lines of the body. Practice drawing the action stick figures in a few strokes while looking at a female subject and you'll notice how the body flows.

STEP 18.

Here are some samples of how these stick figures really help with the female figure structure, even in action. I am closing out now. But you all have been wonderful and it has been a great pleasure to do this tutorial with you. Please fav, comment, and show your love here. And I will definitely reply back soon or eventually. Love, peace, happiness, success, and more beautiful days to ya! *hug* *blowkiss*
