How to Sketch an Anime Boy
This is Hibari Kyoya from the manga & anime tv series, "Reborn." I didn't want to wear everybody out by drawing Usui over and over again so I looked for a dark-haired cute anime boy and fell in love with the reference pic that this is made from. I worked hard on this digital and I'm pleasantly satisfied with how it came out. My tutorial will lightly touch on anime proportions, hair, and some facial feature sketches. STEP 1.
We are taking a shortcut in the guidelines. Draw the circle with the intersecting lines for the eyes and nose. Get in the long lines for his neck and torso Now sketch in the shoulder, arms, sleeve, torso, and hip shapes. Don't forget to add those thin lines representing his scarf, tie, and coat. Sketch with a No. 2 pencil. Remember to do it lightly for easy erasure.
STEP 2.
You will need to click on the picture to see where to draw the tiny lines and spikes for his hair. Look closely and see where his eyebrows, eyes, and jawlines appear. Don't forget his mouth.
STEP 3.
Make sure you click on the pic for a larger version. You can always zoom out if it's too big. Now sketch in the rest of his hair. Draw lightly please.
STEP 4.
Now sketch in his collar, arm, and part of the scarf. See how they relate to the guidelines.
STEP 5.
Take your time while drawing this picture because in this step you need to pay close attention to the lines of his collar, tie, and button accessory. Remember to see how these lines relate to the guidelines.
STEP 6.
I think this guy sports a mighty nice look. Sketch in his taped hand and flowing scarf.
STEP 7.
Draw in his coat sleeve and side of coat.
STEP 8.
Sketch in the second button and accessory (swag, flap, whatever it is).
STEP 9.
At this point, draw in the lower part of his coat, shirt, and belt with the belt loops band and sleeve. Don't forget to draw the coat folds on the right side of the paper.
STEP 10.
Last but not least complete drawing his pants. Now you can erase the guidelines if you haven't already.
STEP 11.
Your drawing may look like this or you might have your own version. At this point, you can color in your picture with a medium of your choice.
STEP 12.
Here is the basic color combination of the Anime boy, Hibari Kyoya from "Reborn." Following this step are tips on sketching/drawing an anime boy.
STEP 13.
Here are some examples of haircuts (in anime fashion) that you can experiment with Try making up new styles. Or look at some anime pics to practice different styles for boys.
STEP 14.
In each drawing, the iris is slightly covered by the upper eyelid. Do not draw full circled irises inside the eye. ARROWS point to a fleshy pink membrane near the eye white at the bottom of the eye. That is why the iris looks like it's floating on the membrane, not touching the tip of the lower lid. Do not draw the iris touching the lower lid. DASHES show the catch lights in the eye normally has one near the top and at the bottom. In eye #1, there are three catch lights--that makes the eyes teary or very sparkly for anime characters. These are at a 180-degree angle. The top light is bigger than the lower one. Eye #4 has no pupil, giving the character a blank expression.
STEP 15.
There are so many different types and moods for the anime boy character. Practice sketching some of these styles.
STEP 16.
Here's some fashion of Hibari from 5 to 25 years old. You can practice sketching those long legs or cute chibi-like face.
STEP 17.
This chart shows the basic realistic body proportions of a boy up to an adult. Now look at the next step and compare proportions of this anime boy against the realistic proportions. You'll see they're very close.
STEP 18.
As you've noticed, the anime boy becomes more slender as he grows taller. In some anime shows, the boy can be up to 9 heads long! Now that's what I call Daddy Long Legs!
STEP 19.
Last but not least, I want to show you how great a pencil is. And you can get these same effects with a regular No. 2 pencil. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise. I'm closing now. Let me know what you think of this tutorial. I love hearing from you. I really like this tutorial because you actually show the seven heads thing and not many people do that so I'm very impressed!
