Here is a very detailed tutorial on "how to draw a guard dog", step by step. The reason for this lesson is because I have four of these same exact dogs in my house and as you know German Shepherds are known to be one of the top breed of dog for home protection, police work, search and rescue, and so on and so forth. I truly love this breed because of their intelligence, nobility, courage, and loyalty. We have two males and two females that range in colors from all black, to black & tan, and red and black. Guard dogs are always depicted as being vicious, mean, and evil. My thought on that is, of course they appear this way to folks that don't own Fido, they are just acting on instinct and their first instinct is to protect their owners and their territory. I for one feel very safe with my shepherds, and for those of you that that have a German shepherd, I'm sure you know my exact feeling. Of course let's not forget about Fife who is also a very good guard dog because without those small toy breeds, we wouldn't be afraid to get our ankles bit by them when coming into a strangers home. It doesn't matter what size dog you have, if the canine loves you they will ultimately die for you and yours. Have fun drawing a guard dog folks, and be sure to leave some feedback because I love hearing what you think.

How to Draw a Guard Dog

how to draw a guard dog step 1

Let us first draw the guard dog from the front view as he would look coming at you barking. Make a circle for the head, then draw the oblong shape for the barking mouth. Add a nose guide, then the facial guides. You will then sketch out the top or tip of the snout, then detail the nose until one is formed. Draw the open mouth shape like so, then proceed to step two.

We will work on the mouth first which means all we have to do is sketch out the teeth, tongue, and the rest of the detailing inside the mouth. You're going to need to take your time as you sketch in those teeth. Once you have the canines drawn in, you can begin working in sketching out the head and face from a frontal view. Sketch in all the detailing to the face which is the dog's coat, then draw in the shape of the neck, and all the definition on the neck.

When you are done, the drawing should look like the one you see here. Now you can choose to color it in. FYI, this is what my black male shepherd looks like when he is barking or fighting with my female. His name is Bear.

Now we will draw the guard dog in a lunging pose. Sketch out the frame work first which will give you a workable mannequin. When the frame work is done, you can begin sketching out the snout, jaw line, and then the fangs.

Work on completing the guard dog's head by sketching out the head in full form, then the pointed ears, face, crinkle on the snout, and then sketch out the body which is the back, butt area, and hind leg and paw. Don't forget the collar.
