How to Sketch a Realistic Dragon
I am now an official DragoArt artist! I get to draw a dragon. When I saw this World of Warcraft Dragon with its scary jaw and talons, I knew this was the one. The line drawing is intermediate, but the finished shaded drawing is advanced. You can stop at the line drawing or go on to the difficulty stage of shading those scales! STEP 1.
With a No. 2 pencil sketch the circles and lines.
STEP 2.
Begin by drawing the dragon's small horns, eye, and part of his snout with nostrils.
STEP 3.
Now draw in the teeth and lower jaw.
STEP 4.
Keep a close eye on how the lined drawing relates to the guidelines. Sketch in the wing.
STEP 5.
Add the arm, talons, and part of the hill.
STEP 6.
Sketch in this fun part, its throat and spiked fins.
STEP 7.
Now add the armor-looking back.
STEP 8.
Now add the dragon's large wing.
STEP 9.
Follow through on the crustacean-looking shoulder.
STEP 10.
Sketch in the arm with its huge spikes and the claws.
STEP 11.
Now draw in the portion of his rear legs with talons.
STEP 12.
You're almost finished. Now draw in the dragon's tail and its armor backing.
STEP 13.
I made this line drawing especially for you. If you want you can either color it in or shade it. Next step has different types of pencils you can use.
STEP 14.
I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.
STEP 15.
Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump.
STEP 16.
1) I used medium to dark gray pastels for great area cover. 2) I used my blending stump and tissue to get a smooth even texture of the pastel. Added some veins and scales with my kneaded eraser. 3) In my Adobe Photo-editing program, I added more highlights for scales and darkened the shadows, his wings, spikes, and horns. 4) I added more white highlights. Then layered in some clouds and a mountain peak.
STEP 17.
Here is the final product. I lightened the outline, added more highlights and blurred them. I am closing out now.
