In this tutorial I'll show you how to draw realistic hyenas, full body and head shot, I've included also some tips on how to draw snarl and teeth. This is my first tutorial, I hope you will find it useful!

STEP 1.
Let's start with the head. First of all draw a circle with a cross in it. The arrows in the image indicate the two main guide lines. Then draw the other lines like in the image, they will help you making the face symmetrical. Add also the base form of the muzzle.
STEP 2.
Add the base form of the ears using the lines we prepared in the previous step. Draw also two small circles for the eyes and a big circle for the nose.
STEP 3.
Now that the guidelines are done, we can start drawing the lineart.
STEP 4.
Define the form of muzzle and face.
STEP 5.
Draw the form of the head and the hears (make them a little bit fluffy but not too much). Remember that the head is not a perfect circle.
STEP 6.
Draw the neck and some fur on the head. The neck has to be quite thick because hyenas are muscular animals, especially the females.
STEP 7.
Add the details, like whiskers and some fur and the head is done!
STEP 8.
If you want to draw a snarling hyena it's useful to know how the skull is done so you can understand how the jaw moves when the mouth is open. To show its teeth the hyena contracts the skin on the muzzle and also the nose is lifted up. Remember to put in evidence also the crest on the neck.
STEP 9.
Let's start the full body drawing the guide lines.
STEP 10.
Start drawing the head and the fluffy neck. Hyenas have a short muzzle and quite big ears.
STEP 11.
Draw the shoulders and the forelegs. The main characteristic of the hyena is that the frontal part of the body is more developed than the back.
STEP 12.
Continue drawing the body using the guide lines and adding some fur on the belly.
STEP 13.
Draw the short hind legs and the short, fluffy tail.
STEP 14.
Add nose, mouth, eyes and detail into the ears.
STEP 15.
Add the last details: whiskers, fur, claws and some lines that suggest the muscles. The hyena is finished!Comments: Post Comment

This is the best Hyena tutorial I've found ever. Most people draw them too much looking like wolves or don't explain steps properly. I'm a human figure artist, so trying to learn how to draw the animal form is foreign to me since I don't know how the parts work and can't shape them sufficiently. Thank you so much for this.
