How to Draw a Horse

In this next tutorial I will be showing you how to draw a Shire horse step by step. If you are not familiar with this breed of horse I will give you the 411 to let you know how beautiful this horse really is. But before I get into that I would like to say that out of all the horses in the world I think the Shire is the most majestic and stunning. Now let’s get back to the nitty gritty shall we? First off the Shire horse is the biggest horse out of all the horses in the world. Their trade mark is the white stocking like pattern they typically have on their legs with hair flowing over the hooves. The body of a shire horse is pretty incredible. When looking at one of these amazing horses, the first thing you notice is how strong and muscular of a build they have. The other name for them is a draught horse and both breeds have dense rounded bodies, a broad back, strong limbs, powerful hind-quarters, and long legs with dense bones. The neck when erect looks perfectly arched and full almost like a statue. The Shire or Draught horse originated in England and was commonly used for the British army because they were strong enough to hold heavy amounts of armor and they were very durable. The first recorded largest Shire horse was Sampson, who was born in the year of 1846 in Toddington Mills, Bedfordshire England. He stood at a whopping seven and a half feet by the time he was four years old. They renamed Sampson to Mammoth because of his incredible size. Before he died he weighed over three thousand, three hundred pounds. The second recorded largest Shire horse was called Goliath. He was a dray horse who belonged to the Young & Co. brewery. He held the Guinness World Record for being the tallest living horse at almost seven feet high. He held this record until July 2001, he later passed and is now a memory. The Shire horse is truly an amazing breed of horse and even though they are extremely large, they are wonderfully beautiful. This tutorial will show you "how to draw a horse", but I also provide a more in depth look at another way to draw a horse. Enjoy, and I will be back in with more lessons so stay tuned there is more on the way.

how to draw a shire horse step 1

STEP 1.

Start this first step by drawing out the guidelines and shapes of the horse. First make a small circle for the head and then draw out the muzzle shape. You will then draw a neck line of position. You will then draw out a large oval shape for the mid section of the body. Once that is done you will add the limb lines and then the shape of the hind end. Draw a tail and two front hooves shapes.

STEP 2.

Now that you have drawn out the guidelines you will start adding the shape of the Shire horses body starting with the head and nose. You will then draw out the shape of his neck front and back and then the chest. Once that is done you can draw out the shaping out the front legs and then the hind legs, Sketch in some detailing lines for his tail and then add an eye and color it in.

STEP 3.

Now that you have reached step three you are ready to start adding some detailing and definition. Add the other ear and then give him a nostril hole. Sketch out the shape of the bottom lip and jaw as shown. You will then start sketching in the hair of his mane and then draw out the shape of the front and hind legs as well as the hair that flows over. Sketch out the shape of his belly and then add the hooves.

STEP 4.

You have now reached your last drawing step and all you will do here is add the markings on the body of the Shire horse. Add detailing to the mane and tail and then add detailing or definition to the face. Once that is done you can start erasing all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one.

STEP 5.

This is what your horse should come out looking like. Now that you have just learned how to draw a Shire horse step by step, you can start adding color to him/her. I hope you all liked this first tutorial and I also hope that you have learned something new.
