Christmas bells are ringing and the snow is falling. It’s been a long day today and because of that I am starting my first of many drawing lessons late. For my first tutorial I will be showing you "how to draw a praying mantis", step by step. Now just to refresh your memory, the praying mantis is a long green slender bug that has extremely long front arms or legs. How did this green bug get its name you ask? That is a question that can easily be answered. The mantis has legs that are bent and held together which puts them in a position of prayer hence the name “praying mantis”. The shapes of their heads and body make them peculiar looking insects that sort of resemble a mix between an alien and a fly. The praying mantis has triangle shaped heads and large fly like eyes. They are almost always green in color but have been found to be brown as well. Did you know that these “stick bugs” can turn their heads 180 degrees to scan their surroundings using their rounded big eyes. Because of their color it is very simple for these bugs to stay camouflaged, they are able to live in a variety of plants that usually have large leaves and are very branchy with ease. If you look at a praying mantis you will notice that their front legs have spike like pricks on them. They use these spikes to catch their prey which usually consist of moths, crickets, grasshoppers, flies, spiders, and other insects that cross paths with this lean, green, stealth machine. Now here is an interesting fact that some of you may have heard before in the past; female praying mantis are known to eat their mates after and even during mating. Isn’t that wild? This bug can only reach up to five inches in size and only last about 12 months in the wild. SO basically these insects are born to feed, mate, eat their mates, lay eggs, and die. Hmm, that is sort of a pointless life. Anyway this tutorial will show you "how to draw a praying mantis", step by step. I will be back with more fun tuts in a while so stay tuned kiddies.
