How to Draw a Griffin

Hello again boys and girls, woman and men and other visitors of DragoArt.com. I haven’t uploaded anything in the past few days because I was working on a really cool tutorial on a creature that needed to be updated to something better. For my first tutorial of the day I will be showing you "how to draw a Griffin step by step". Now as you know I have a total of two Gryphon lessons, and to me they are not really that good now that I look back on them. This Griffin that I am showing you how to draw today is a traditional gold colored creature that we all know and love. I am very proud of this updated version of a griffinn because it came out spectacular and wicked beautiful. I drew very long and hard on this sketch because I wanted it to come out just right. All the inspiration for this griffin came from the movie “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” which I watched on DVD two days ago. The gryphons in the movie were so smooth looking and majestic when they flew around in the skies and that is what I wanted my version to come out looking like. Now if you notice I still have a problem with drawing dragons and other creatures from different angles which is why almost all of my animal like drawing of fantasy creatures are either from the side or the back. The main reason why this griffon took me so long is because I drew him in a three fourths view perspective and to me that was very challenging to do. In the end though the creation came out awesome and colorful and all the colors blend together nicely. This tutorial will show you how to draw a traditional gryphon step by step. Like always the instructions are simple to read and the steps are easy to follow which makes this tutorial easy enough for everyone to try. I will be back soon with more drawing fun so stay tuned kiddies.

STEP 1.

Okay lets start this first step by drawing out some basic guidelines and shapes to form a mannequin like frame for your griffon. Start with a small circle for the head and then add the facial guidelines. Once that is done you can go ahead and start drawing out the body shapes for the chest and the back side. Add the majestic shapes of his wings and then add the limb guidelines as shown.

STEP 2.

In this next step you will start adding the end feather lines on his wings as shown to you here and then the wing bone on th eleft feather. Once that is complete you can thicken his tail and sketch out the shape of the neck, chest and front and hind leg shapes. Give him an outline of a eagle like beak and then some brow lines.

STEP 3.

As you can see by the time you are finished with step three, your griffon should be looking good. You will start capping off the rounded tips of the end feathers on his wings and then draw more of the wing bone. Once you do that start sketching out the shape of the gryphon's face and then detail his body with some hair and feathers. You will thicken the tail and then add some shape to his claws.

STEP 4.

You have now reached step four and with step four your drawing should be getting easier to finish off. All you will do here is add some of the small feather definition lines that are typically seen on the inside of any bird wing. Once that is done you can draw out the shape of the front legs and claws and then start adding some detail and definition to the eagles chest, head and beak. Add the detailing lines on the front of the clawed legs and then proceed on.

STEP 5.

You are now on step five and once on step five you will start sketching in the final definition and detail to the griffin's had as shown. Start by drawing out the shapes of the ears and then define the sides of his front legs. The right wing bone needs some detailing as well and then start erasing all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one.

STEP 6.

And wha la! This is what your gryphon should look like when you are totally done. All you have to do now is add your own color. I hope you liked learning how to draw a gryphon step by step. I shall return with other fun drawing lessons.
