How to Draw the White House

1

Start out by picking your pencils. I used a 4H pencil for sketching and light shading, an H pencil for slightly darker lines, an HB pencil for general shading, and a B pencil for dark lines/shading.

2

Start out with some basic shapes. This was the only step that I used a straight-edge for but if you want to make your lines perfectly straight use a ruler throughout the drawing.

3

Start building your sketch by adding more basic shapes to the center section of the building.

4

Now sketch in the outer sections.

5

Add in the basic shapes of the foliage and water fountain.

6

Use an HB pencil to roughly shade the background.

7

Smooth out your shading using a paper towel or blending stump.

8

Now use 4H and H pencil to start adding detailed lines. Work from section to section.

9

Define the rest of the top section.

10

Shade in the top section. Use (from darkest to lightest) HB, H, and 4H pencils.

11

Further define the center section and waterfall.

12

Further define the center section and water fountain.

13

Shade in the center section. You can use HB and B pencils for the shadowed areas.

14

Use a B pencil to roughly and lightly shade in the trees and bushes.

15

Shade in the foliage using HB and B pencils. You can get as detailed as you want. Make sure that you can see a few limbs and twigs sticking out beneath the foliage.

16

Sketch in the windows on the side sections using H and 4H pencils. After that lightly go over your building with a blending stump to smooth out your shading a bit. Make sure that the fountain is whiter than the building since the White House is't per

17

Finish up the drawing by shading in the front hedge bush using B and HB pencils. Hopefully you can learn as much as I did from this drawing. Again, expect some perspective drawings and more buildings in the near future!

Description: Today I'll be showing you how to sketch/draw the United States White House, home of the President. This is my first building tutorial and one of my first building drawings. I wanted to see if my regular drawing technique would work with more geometric subject matter. In a way it did, but after this tutorial expect some perspective tutorials in the future!
