How to Draw a Black Panther, Realistic Panther

Hey everyone, here's another tutorial to add to my list of big cat tutorials. I love black panthers for their intimidating look. Just imagine those eyes staring back at you from the shadows on a dark night!

STEP 1.

First thing's first. Go ahead and pick your pencils. I used an H pencil for sketching, a B pencil for shading/lines, and a 7B pencil for dark shading.

STEP 2.

Start out with a simple basic sketch. Use the guidelines if you need them.

STEP 3.

Your sketch may look something like this after you have erased away any unnecessary lines.

STEP 4.

Start lightly adding more detail to your sketch using the same pencil (H for me). Start around the eyes.

STEP 5.

Sketch in the ears and forehead fur. Pay attention to the flow of the fur.

STEP 6.

Continue working your way down the face with your sketching.

STEP 7.

Finish up the face sketching.

STEP 8.

Roughly shade in the body fur.

STEP 9.

Use a 7B pencil to lightly and roughly sketch in the background.

STEP 10.

Smooth out your shading with a blending stump or a cloth.

STEP 11.

Start shading by shading with a 7B pencil then blending over the area around the eyes.

STEP 12.

Go over your shading using 7B and B pencils. Press lightly with the 7B pencil and press down hard with the B pencil. Remember the flow of the fur as you shade. After that roughly shade over the top half of the drawing with a 7B pencil.

STEP 13.

Shade in the top half using B and 7B pencils again. After that go ahead and shade and blend over the next section of the head.

STEP 14.

Shade down to the nose then roughly shade and blend over the rest of the face. Erase a few whiskers over the cheeks.

STEP 15.

Develop your shading around the mouth a bit more. There's no need to go into too much details yet. After that use a 7B pencil to roughly shade over the body.

STEP 16.

Now it's time to start cleaning up your shading and details. Start by smoothing out your background some more by adding some layers with a 7B pencil then smoothing them out with a blending stump or paper towel. After that start cleaning up the shading on the panther from the eyes up.

STEP 17.

Make your way down the panthers head. Start detailing the individual whiskers. Outline them using a B pencil.

STEP 18.

Go over the fur using a 7B pencil until it is smooth. Then use a B pencil to go over the shading again. Make sure to make your lines follow the flow of the fur that you originally sketched in.

STEP 19.

Finish up the drawing by going over your shading and detail again. I had a hard time scanning this drawing due to all of the glare cause by all of the graphite. The amount of glare you get really relies on what type of paper and which pencils you are using. So, don't fret if your drawing doesn't look like this from more than one view point. As always comments and questions are more than welcome!

Will do. Thanks! meowla
@finalprodigy
Thanks! It looks that dark when you look at it under hard light at the right angle. I had to digitally mess with levels in order to make the scan look just right because of all the glare from the graphite. If your drawings are under good lighting and still aren't very dark try practicing your penciling. Building up layers is the most effective way to make your shading darker. Try getting gradually darker with each layer until you absolutely can't shade any darker. Practice this with different pencils. Use pencils in the B to 9B range.
