Effie Trinket, a Capitol-born chaperone, is assigned to oversee District 12's tributes in the Hunger Games, specifically Katniss and Peeta in the 74th and 75th games. In the movie, played amazingly by Elizabeth Banks, she carries out such tasks as drawing the tributes' names at the reaping and escorting them to the Capitol. The pictures of Effie is modeled by Elizabeth. In the movie, there is a lot of makeup on Elizabeth Banks to give Effie that mature look. I've categorized this tutorial "Advanced" because of Effie's huge rose adornment, flowery boa, and curly hair. So this tutorial is in tribute to one of the engaging characters of this already popular movie and bestselling book. I wanted to treat you in this "Hunger Games" tutorial. You can draw Effie's 3/4 view, profile or both. I just want you to have fun. Let me know what you experienced by commenting, faving and voting. Much love to you all. I cannot wait to hear from you.

STEP 7.

Here's where you can focus better on her hair and rose adornment. Use those short curly strokes for her hair on the lieft side facing you. Try staying close to the lines that represent the direction of her hair. This will help as you shade it in.

STEP 8.

You can see why I've broken down her hair into two steps. Take your time to apply the curls and lines. If you need to take a break, go ahead. That's what I do to keep focus.

STEP 9.

If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines. Also finish her flower boa and dress. Don't rush this, take your time, and keep looking at this picture reference to draw the lines in the right places.

STEP 10.

Remember, there are three parts to this tutorial. #1) Is this Ink Drawing, which you can darken the pencil outline and be done or color it in. #2) You can continue to the pencil shading. Keep your outlines light. #3) The Profile Ink Drawing of Effie, which is simpler than this first drawing. I would love it if you learn and have fun at the same time. Any of the 3 options are there for you to pick and choose. Now on to some shading tips.

STEP 11.

. Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.

STEP 13.

The picture that goes with this step shows two different ways to hold your pencil to acquire certain effects. OVERHAND: Holding a sharpened pencil in normal writing form with fingers in the middle or near the lead gives you great control and thin/detailed strokes. UNDERHAND: Holding the pencil at a 45 degrees or near level to the table with end of pencil under your palm with pencil on the flat side, gives you large shading coverage. With the No.2 pencil, you have the exposed lead side to shade with. But for a wider swath, use that Cretacolor Monolith graphite pencil with no wood casing. The whole sharpened portion is all lead, like in the step's picture. Practice the toning values to help you with control.

STEP 14.

PENCIL STROKES & TONE, SHADING, TEXTURE -- For your convenience, I have inserted this step with different pencils, strokes to use. And you can study the shapes that make up this drawing universe, along with tone, shading, and texture.

STEP 16.

After printing out a number of the above template, practice shading in the values like this picture. You become familiar with this shading technique that gives you more control and confidence.

STEP 17.

This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied light medium to dark gray to her face and hair. I mainly added dark gray and charcoal gray to her rose, boa, and dress. Looks like a blob, right? That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.

STEP 18.

I put these two pictures close together on purpose. The first is shaded with a tissue (no blending stump). I can still see my outline pencil strokes. The second picture I used my kneaded eraser like a drawing tool. You can see how much highlight details I can get.

STEP 19.

If you are tackling this drawing, I tip my hat (if I had one) off to you! I'm not kidding. This is why this picture is advanced. The details in her rose, hair, and boa is challenging. The first picture, I used a blending stump on her face. Then I applied black pastel to her boa for the shaded areas. Now these shaded areas were soooo small, I used a small tortillon to shade in those tight areas. Yes, I applied black pastel to the rose in the 2nd picture and then shaded. I added some medium gray in her curls as well. Then I sprayed with "Krylon Workable Fixatif" to adhere the pencil & pastel to the paper for a non-smudging and workable surface.Let's check out the next step.

STEP 20.

I sketched her hair in darker lines with my 0.7mm mechanical. The rose, boa and dress I used my 9B pencil and in larger darkened areas I used the 9B graphite crayon. For her lashes and shadow on her nose I used my 9B pencil. I also used dark and medium gray pastels for the background. Then I sprayed with my workable fixative again. Let's check out the next step.

STEP 21.

*Do the dance of joy!* I have finally FINISHED! I took the pure white opaque watercolor and added more highlights to her hair strands, makeup, and sparkle in her eye. This pastel stuff really works well on Vellum paper that's nice and smooth. I am totally satisfied. And I hope you are too with your creation. To help out with specific areas of highlights, tone, texture, etc., the next two following steps will show you.

PIC 4: Draw in outline placement for shading and her hair.PIC 5: Draw in boa & suit. PIC 6: Now sketch the logo. PIC 7: Now you've completed a drawing of Effie's profile.
