Madonna (born August 16, 1958) is an amazing American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. To me, she is a precursor to Lady Gaga. I love her style of the female fashion trend of the 1980s of fishnet stockings, lace tops, and crimped bleached hair. It was created by stylist and jewelry designer Maripol. This is what the tutorial picture is based on and I took my time while drawing the picture, enjoying the process along the way. I've made this tut "Advanced" because of her hair and jewelry. I'm hoping you can learn to draw from this tutorial and find it helpful. Everyone... peace & joy to you with love!

How to Draw Madonna

how to draw a spider tattoo, tattoo spider
how to draw madonna step 1

STEP 1.

Draw the oval lightly with a No.2 or HB pencil. Make sure you draw it as seen in the picture.

how to draw madonna step 2

STEP 2.

Now draw in the bisecting red line to balance her facial features.

how to draw madonna step 3

STEP 3.

Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for hair line and head mass.

how to draw madonna step 4

STEP 4.

You can draw in the lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, d. for mouth.

how to draw madonna step 5

STEP 5.

Now draw Madonna's eyebrows and eyes. Notice that the left eye facing you is cut off by the bridge of her nose... draw that too.

how to draw madonna step 6

STEP 6.

Observe where Madonna's features appear in relation to the guidelines. Draw in her nose, and mouth.

how to draw madonna step 7

STEP 7.

We are taking the drawing steps a little slower, hopefully, to make it easier to draw her details in sections. This time sketch in the left side of her face, hair and neck. Don't forget the little earring showing under her chin. Take your time to draw in the hair lines.

how to draw madonna step 8

STEP 8.

Now draw in the right side of her hair blowing up. Take your time. When you sketch in her hair, add those straight lines and curls. Try staying close to the lines that represent the direction & curls of her hair. This will help as you shade it in

STEP 9.

If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines. Also finish drawing her ears, earrings, and necklace. These details are the reason why I made this tutorial advanced. It'll take patience to get her hair and jewelry drawn.

STEP 10.

I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.

how to draw madonna step 11

STEP 11.

Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.

STEP 12.

This time Acrylics has won! Sandpaper, the new kid on the block has to take a back seat to my wonderful Titanium White or Opaque White Watercolors for HIGHLIGHTS! Yaaaa! Try it, you'll like it!

STEP 13.

The picture that goes with this step shows two different ways to hold your pencil to acquire certain effects. OVERHAND: Holding a sharpened pencil in normal writing form with fingers in the middle or near the lead gives you great control and thin/detailed strokes. UNDERHAND: Holding the pencil at a 45 degrees or near level to the table with end of pencil under your palm with pencil on the flat side, gives you large shading coverage. With the No.2 pencil, you have the exposed lead side to shade with. But for a wider swath, use that Cretacolor Monolith graphite pencil with no wood casing. The whole sharpened portion is all lead, like in the step's picture. Practice the toning values to help you with control.

STEP 14.

PENCIL STROKES & TONE, SHADING, TEXTURE -- For your convenience, I have inserted this step with different pencils, strokes to use. And you can study the shapes that make up this drawing universe, along with tone, shading, and texture

STEP 15.

The picture here is a great exercise for value shading. I've got a little secret tip for you to make things easier. You can download this to your desktop. First click on the picture to have access to full size. By right clicking on your mouse, you can select "Save Image As." It should save to your desktop.

STEP 16.

After printing out a number of the above template, practice shading in the values like this picture. You become familiar with this shading technique that gives you more control and confidence.

how to draw madonna step 17

STEP 17.

For the benefit of my confidence, I went over her hair and sketched other parts so I wouldn't lose the details. I resorted to sketching in the details with my 0.7mm HB trusty mechanical pencil (equivalent to the standard No.2 pencil). I also took the 9B Graphite Pencil for really dark areas (like eyebrows, eyes, back of hair, and jewelry).

how to draw madonna step 18

STEP 18.

With my blending stump, I smoothed out the sketch lines and added more depth to her hair, eyebrows, and jewelry. I took tissue paper and blended her facial area.

how to draw madonna step 19

STEP 19.

This is the first start with the pastel application. If you do the whole picture in a pencil sketch, this is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied light & medium gray to face. Medium dark gray to hair, neck, and shoulders. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.

how to draw madonna step 20

STEP 20.

Here I used my blending stump to "draw" in more lines, add more shading to her eyes, hair, jewelry, and neck. I needed to whiten areas like some hair curls, nose, and lip shine. So I used my "kneaded" eraser. TIP: The jewelry crystal shape is drawn in with a blending stump-hexagonal, diamond type of shadows (this prevents harsh lines and a cartoon effect.) After those adjustments, I sprayed the picture with "Krylon Workable Fixatif" to adhere the pencil & pastel to the paper for a non-smudging and workable surface.

how to draw madonna step 21

STEP 21.

PICTURE ONE: I covered my background with medium gray, then at the edges dark gray pastels. I spread the darker edged areas with a blending stump and smoothed lighter areas with tissue paper. PICTURE TWO: I took my Kneaded Eraser and formed more white hair strands. With the 9B pencil, I added more shaded areas in her hair. Then I sprayed with the workable fixative.

STEP 22.

Basically, I added more highlights with Opaque Watercolor to the catch lights in her eyes, added more light stray hairs and shine, gave a little shine on her upper lip. Also I added some white to the jewelry in small areas. Now Madonna "pops"! To help out with specific areas of highlights, tone, texture, etc., the next two following steps will show you.

STEP 23.

Without highlights, your picture would have a flat appearance. Click on this picture to learn how to make your own picture POP out!

Hehehe, now you're making me laugh! I wondered who was going to comment on that. Actually, her more recent pics that I loved were too small. And this one won my heart because I loved how she looked in the 80's--bleached & crimped hair and that jewelry screamed... "Draw Me! Draw Me!" Yep, I used to be young & crazy. Now I'm just... oh well! *wink* Thank you, serget! Love ya! inlove rock yay
