Josh Hutcherson (born October 12, 1992) is an American film and television actor. I've seen him in "Zathura," "Bridge to Terabithia," "Journey to the Center of the Earth." I can't wait for "The Hunger Games" where he plays Peeta Mellark. This is the "sister" tut to Jennifer Lawrence who plays Katniss alongside him. STEP 1.
IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ. I want to state this first since I'm asked so many times. Let's make it easier on you. REQUESTS on any character/person you would like as a tutorial, at the top MAIN MENU under the DragoArt.com logo, click on “REQUESTS” button that is next to the “Login” button (Picture 1). Give your name, email, and type in your request (Picture 2). Then submit. This will make sure it goes through the right channels. And you can always give the name of the artist you desire to create the tutorial. * * * * * * TUT INFO: For information about a tutorial's character, go to the right-hand bar section on the page. You'll see the title: TUTORIAL INFORMATION. Once you get there, scroll down a bit to "Artist Comments." Notice the orange arrows (Picture 3). That's where you can get lots of info on Bilbo or any other person/character in another tut. NOW ON WITH THE TUT!
STEP 2.
Draw the oval lightly with a No.2 or HB pencil. Make sure you draw it as seen in the picture.
STEP 3.
Now draw in the bisecting red line to balance his facial features.
STEP 4.
Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for hair line and head mass.
STEP 5.
You can draw in the lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, d. for mouth.
STEP 6.
Now draw Josh's eyebrows and eyes.
STEP 7.
Observe where Josh's features appear in relation to the guidelines. Draw in the his nose, grin lines, and mouth.
STEP 8.
Watch closely the side of Josh's face and how it relates to the guidelines. As you draw, you will have more accuracy. Now sketch in his face and hairline, and chin. Since there are so many feathered lines in his hair I decided to do part of it so you can focus better.
STEP 9.
Here's where you can focus better on his hair. Use those long strokes for his hair crowning at the top. Also the short jagged strokes will help with a feathered look. Try staying close to the lines that represent the direction of his hair. This will help as you shade it in.
STEP 10.
If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines. Also finish the back of his neck, collar, and shoulder.
STEP 11.
I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.
STEP 12.
Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.
STEP 13.
This time Acrylics has won! Sandpaper, the new kid on the block has to take a back seat to my wonderful Titanium White for HIGHLIGHTS! Yaaaa! Try it, you'll like it!
STEP 14.
The picture that goes with this step shows two different ways to hold your pencil to acquire certain effects. OVERHAND: Holding a sharpened pencil in normal writing form with fingers in the middle or near the lead gives you great control and thin/detailed strokes. UNDERHAND: Holding the pencil at a 45 degrees or near level to the table with end of pencil under your palm with pencil on the flat side, gives you large shading coverage. With the No.2 pencil, you have the exposed lead side to shade with. But for a wider swath, use that Cretacolor Monolith graphite pencil with no wood casing. The whole sharpened portion is all lead, like in the step's picture. Practice the toning values to help you with control.
STEP 15.
PENCIL STROKES & TONE, SHADING, TEXTURE -- For your convenience, I have inserted this step with different pencils, strokes to use. And you can study the shapes that make up this drawing universe, along with tone, shading, and texture.
STEP 16.
The picture here is a great exercise for value shading. I've got a little secret tip for you to make things easier. You can download this to your desktop. First click on the picture to have access to full size. By right clicking on your mouse, you can select "Save Image As." It should save to your desktop.
STEP 17.
After printing out a number of the above template, practice shading in the values like this picture. You become familiar with this shading technique that gives you more control and confidence.
STEP 18.
For the benefit of my confidence, I went over his hair and sketched other parts of his face so I wouldn't lose the details. I resorted to sketching in the details with my 0.7mm HB trusty mechanical pencil (equivalent to the standard No.2 pencil).
STEP 19.
The first picture I blended the sketch with my blending stump & tissue paper. The second picture is the first Pastel Application. It would take hours upon hours if I covered all his hair, face, and shoulders with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium gray to face and hair. Medium dark gray I applied to shadowed hair strands & left side of shaded face. His shoulders, I applied dark gray. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.
STEP 20.
What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a blending stump (since it won't leave lines and will cover a larger area) and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil). Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (his hair, eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, cheeks, side of face, mouth, chin, and even his shoulders). I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas. I've lightened areas with the kneaded eraser and took a shortcut to really darken his eyes with black pastel and a blending stump. Then I sprayed with "Krylon Workable Fixatif" to adhere the pencil & pastel to the paper for a non-smudging and workable surface
STEP 21.
I sketched in darker with my 9B pencil his eyes & mouth. I placed my 9B pencil flat and barely touching the paper went over the darker side of his face. Between the shadowed hair strands, I used the point of the 9B. To blend, I twisted and curled my stump around like a car on a winding road in-between his hair. *sorry for my ranting* Let's check out the next step.
STEP 22.
*clap your hands!* I have finally FINISHED! I took the pure white opaque watercolor and added highlights to his hair strands and sparkle in his eye. I blended some graphite into the stark white when in shadowed areas. I also added texture with my gray pastels and pencil to his tie portion and jacket. This pastel stuff works great for background too! Circular motions do wonders for clouds. I am totally satisfied. And I hope you are too with your creation. To help out with specific areas of highlights, tone, texture, etc., the next two following steps will show you.
STEP 23.
Without highlights, your picture would have a flat appearance. Click on this picture to learn how to make your own picture POP out!
