How to Draw Frodo, Lord of the Rings
This huggable hobbit, Frodo Baggins, played perfectly by Elijah Woods, is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium "Lord of the Rings" now a movie that has won 17 out of 30 Academy Awards nominated in total. I need to see the whole movie. I only saw some of each one. However, I have enjoyed drawing this unlikely hero, Frodo Baggins. I am hoping you enjoy this tutorial. Let me know by faving, commenting and/or voting. Thank you for stopping by! Love 'n peace.

STEP 1.
Draw the oval lightly with a No.2 or HB pencil. Make sure you draw it as seen in the picture.
STEP 2.
Now draw in the bisecting red line to balance his facial features.
STEP 3.
Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for hair line and head mass.
STEP 4.
You can draw in the lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, d. for mouth placements.
STEP 5.
Now draw the eyebrows and eyes.
STEP 6.
Observe where Frodo's features appear in relation to the guidelines. Draw in his nose and mouth.
STEP 7.
Watch closely the side of Frodo's face and how it relates to the guidelines. As you draw, you will have more accuracy. Also sketch his grin line, chin, and neck. Since there are so many curls on Frodo, I've kept his bangs for you to draw in this step.
STEP 8.
If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines. Also add those small curls to Frodo's hair. Try staying close to the lines that represent the direction & curls of his hair. This will help as you shade it in. Also finish the back of his neck and collars.
STEP 9.
I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.
STEP 10.
Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.
STEP 11.
This time Acrylics has won! Sandpaper, the new kid on the block has to take a back seat to my wonderful Titanium White or Opaque White Watercolors for HIGHLIGHTS! Yaaaa! Try it, you'll like it!
STEP 12.
Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.
STEP 13.
The picture that goes with this step shows two different ways to hold your pencil to acquire certain effects. OVERHAND: Holding a sharpened pencil in normal writing form with fingers in the middle or near the lead gives you great control and thin/detailed strokes. UNDERHAND: Holding the pencil at a 45 degrees or near level to the table with end of pencil under your palm with pencil on the flat side, gives you large shading coverage. With the No.2 pencil, you have the exposed lead side to shade with. But for a wider swath, use that Cretacolor Monolith graphite pencil with no wood casing. The whole sharpened portion is all lead, like in the step's picture. Practice the toning values to help you with control.
STEP 14.
PENCIL STROKES & TONE, SHADING, TEXTURE -- For your convenience, I have inserted this step with different pencils, strokes to use. And you can study the shapes that make up this drawing universe, along with tone, shading, and texture
STEP 15.
The picture here is a great exercise for value shading. I've got a little secret tip for you to make things easier. You can download this to your desktop. First click on the picture to have access to full size. By right clicking on your mouse, you can select "Save Image As." It should save to your desktop.
STEP 16.
After printing out a number of the above template, practice shading in the values like this picture. You become familiar with this shading technique that gives you more control and confidence.
STEP 17.
This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium gray to face. Medium dark gray to hair, right side of shaded face, under the lips, and shoulders. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.
STEP 18.
What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a blending stump (since it won't leave lines and will cover a larger area) and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil). Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (his hair, eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, cheeks, side of face, mouth, chin, and even his shoulders). I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas. I've lightened areas with the kneaded eraser and took a shortcut to really darken his eyes with black pastel and a blending stump. Then I sprayed with "Krylon Workable Fixatif" to adhere the pencil & pastel to the paper for a non-smudging and workable surface.
STEP 19.
I did this step a little different for convenience. To locate those thousands of curls, I added white pastel strokes for shine then sprayed. Afterwards, I used my 9B graphite pencil.
STEP 20.
The background is added with a 9B graphite crayon (they're big & clumsy). I did not get close to his hair to keep from overlapping with the 9B crayon. I also sketched in darker with my 9B pencil his eyes, mouth, outer edge of face, and curls, curls, curls galore. CURLS! Do you notice extra curls on his face? They look realistic because I took the blending stump and used dark gray pastel on it. I twisted and curled my stump around like a car on a winding road. *sorry for my ranting* Let's check out the next step.
STEP 21.
As you can tell, I blended the background with my blending stump and added more dark lines with it, too (like more curly bangs, darker curl parts, eyes, side of face). I smoothed out his skin with white pastel and tissue. I darkened with some more 9B graphite and dark gray pastels. Next step, I will use white opaque watercolor. I will not spray because I noticed the paint beads up. Let's see if it will not bead up in the next step.
STEP 22.
*clap your hands!* It worked! I even got bold with this. Took a tiny bit of black, added white, and got in some good gray tones to his hair and shine. Then I took the pure white opaque watercolor and added highlights to his hair strands and sparkle in his eye. I am totally satisfied. And I hope you are too with your creation. To help out with specific areas of highlights, tone, texture, etc., the next two following steps will show you.
STEP 23.
Without highlights, your picture would have a flat appearance. Click on this picture to learn how to make your own picture POP out!

serget - THanks! I'll be doing Gandalf, Bilbo, and Legolas. Hardness B... hmmmm... B is for Black (it's a softer grade) while H is hard, it can scratch the surface of your paper. With the very tiny barrels you're using, I don't think that's a problem. Sounds like you're dealing with lots of details. Now HB represents a No. 2 regular pencil. I use F (fine) or HB for light toned details. 2B is for darker small details. My 9B is for dark areas...large and small. 9B is the blackest of the lead (I think) and it's very soft and spreads far. I hope I've helped. .gif "B)")

Great advice on mechanical pencils aswell, I use a hardness B, do you think I'd get better result with a HB? For Barrel sizes I use 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm It helps for drawing smaller details.

EagleSoar613 - Hahaha! Probably it'll be some really cool modern art. You're soaring like an eagle, courageously taking on this project. Oh this is really good! I could probably do the drawing, but it would be SUPER terrible. If I tried to do the shading, the shading would look like a four year old scribbled all over it and then tried to smooth it out. NOT pretty.

marsuvees - Thank you!!! That's a great question. The .07mm is the barrel size of the pencil. HB is equivalent to the No.2 Pencil grading/shade.
