STEP 7.

Watch closely the side of Heath's and how it relates to the guidelines. As you draw, you will have more accuracy. Also sketch his cheeks, jawline, and chin.

STEP 8.

If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines. Also add those small strokes to Jake's hair line. Try staying close to the lines that represent the direction & curls of his hair. This will help as you shade it in. I made this tutorial advanced because of the complexity of this picture. Also this step is isolated with the hair only so you can focus on it. Please take your time. If you can't get in all the curls, go ahead and to the outer portion of the hair and pass up the spaghetti swirls within.

STEP 9.

Now you can complete his neck & shoulders (knight garb).

STEP 10.

I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.

STEP 11.

Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.

STEP 13.

The picture that goes with this Step 10 shows two different ways to hold your pencil to acquire certain effects. OVERHAND: Holding a sharpened pencil in normal writing form with fingers in the middle or near the lead gives you great control and thin/detailed strokes. UNDERHAND: Holding the pencil at a 45 degrees or near level to the table with end of pencil under your palm with pencil on the flat side, gives you large shading coverage. With the No.2 pencil, you have the exposed lead side to shade with. But for a wider swath, use that Cretacolor Monolith graphite pencil with no wood casing. The whole sharpened portion is all lead, like in the step's picture. Practice the toning values to help you with control.

STEP 14.

PENCIL STROKES & TONE, SHADING, TEXTURE -- For your convenience, I have inserted this step with different pencils, strokes to use. And you can study the shapes that make up this drawing universe, along with tone, shading, and texture.

STEP 15.

The picture here is a great exercise for value shading. I've got a little secret tip for you to make things easier. You can download this to your desktop. First click on the picture to have access to full size. By right clicking on your mouse, you can select "Save Image As." It should save to your desktop.

STEP 16.

After printing out a number of the above template, practice shading in the values like this picture. You become familiar with this shading technique that gives you more control and confidence.

STEP 17.

This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium gray to face. Medium dark gray to hairline, eyebrows, cheeks, and shoulders. I also used dark gray and black to his side of nose, neck and shoulders. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.

STEP 18.

This portrait is more challenging, much like Heath's acting roles. I added some more dark gray to his cheek and jaw area. What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a blending stump (since it won't leave lines and will cover a larger area) and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil). Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (his hair, eyes, eyebrows, lips, cheeks, side of face, mouth, chin, and even his shoulders). I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas.

STEP 19.

This is exactly why I categorized this picture ADVANCED. It took a lot of focus to shade in his hair, hairline side of face, eyes, etc. I used my kneaded eraser to bring out the blond shine in his hair and other highlighted features on his face. I sketched in some more dark tones and details to his hair, face, and neck. With the hair, I'm still following its direction. At this point, I have not blended with anything. Heath is taking shape.

STEP 20.

On this picture, I took a blending stump and smoothed out the lines from the sketch. Added more dark tones with my 9B graphite pencil then smoothed his facial areas with a tissue. The dark shadows on his face and his extra curly hair makes this picture more challenging. Hang in there! You can make this work.

STEP 21.

So I came back looked at the tone on my reference picture and darkened his facial areas with a blending stump and went over his hair, eyebrows, and shadowed area with my 9B graphite pencil. To smooth his skin texture, I went over again with a light gray pastel stick. Since my kneaded eraser wouldn't work anymore on the medium tones already sprayed, I took a white pastel stick and highlighted his upper cheek area and the area to the right of his nose (facing us). To make some of his features POP out, I added white opaque watercolor to his eyes, lashes, hair, side of face, and knight garb. I am satisfied and I hope you are too. To help out with specific areas of highlights, tone, texture, etc., the next two following steps will show you.

Without highlights, your picture would have a flat appearance. Click on this picture to learn how to make your own picture POP out!
