How to Draw a Golden Retriever

This lesson was originally drawn by one of my friends Animorpher. Originally she had her own drawing that she had done, but since this tutorial has become increasingly popular, I figured I would submit a redo of the beautiful and friendly Golden Retriever. These dogs are one of the worlds top breeds to own, and for good reason too. They are sometimes confused with the "Labrador Retriever" and I guess it's because they are both retrieving dogs, and because they are very loyal, friendly, and compassionate companions. Their colors come in a variety of light cream, to golden yellow or even a yellowish brown. The Golden Retriever is a breed that is a good fit for families because they are excellent with children, they love being needed and appreciated, and most importantly, they love being lead by their leader which is the alpha. They are considered to be excellent hunting, and retrieving dogs, but if you are looking for a guard dog, then don't bother buying a Golden. These pets have little or no guarding instinct which means you're better off getting a German Shepherd if a guarding breed is what you are looking for. I myself think that this breed has a good looking appearance especially when they are pups. But unfortunately my breed of choice is the GSD. Either way you will still have fun learning “how to draw a Golden Retriever”. Another thing I would like to mention about the GR, they require a good amount of exercise, so throwing the ball with them for an hour in an open field or giving them a brisk walk should do the trick especially if you live in an apartment. If you don't mentally, and physically exercise these dogs, they can become very destructive around the house. Did you know that the Golden Retriever is a breed that was developed in Scotland? It's true, the Scottish Highlands to be exact. The breed was developed by Lord Tweedmouth by crossing an ordinary yellow Flat Coated Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel. These Spaniels are no longer in existence, but the Golden Retriever will forever carry their bloodline. The breed when complete was accepted by the AKC in 1925, and they fall in the Gun Dog, and AKC Sporting group when they are in show. Have fun with this lesson, and if you want to find out if the Golden Retriever is right for you, then visit the AKC to read up on the breed. Happy drawing everyone!

Now use the facial guidelines to draw out the shapes of the eyes, as well as color them in. Next add the zig zag lines for the eyebrows and then draw the nose tip, and mouth lining.

STEP 3.

You can now start sketching out the shape of the Retrievers head and be sure to add the long hanging ears. Also, sketch a bit of fuzz on the top of the puppy's head too.

STEP 4.

Since the Golden Retriever is a long coat breed, you will need to sketch out the long hair on the chest, and on top of the legs. When that is done you can start draw the front legs and paws, as well as the hind leg and tail.

STEP 5.

For your last drawing step all you have to do is finish draw the legs and paws. Be sure to add the puppy toes on each paw both front and back. Sketch out the shaggy looking tail and then start erasing all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one.
