How to Draw Snape, Severus Snape, Harry Potter
Okay guys, after listening to the Nine Inch Nails song “Perfect Drug”, I brewed the thought of doing a tutorial on “how to draw Severus Snape", step by step. I'm sorry to say, but if you've seen the music video for “Perfect Drug”, please watch it as you'll know why I did a tut on Snape. The resemblance between Trent Reznor and Snape are so uncanny. I've been sketching a cool pose for this anime Severus so it'll feed the fans a high voltage fume of “EEEK!”. I tried to make him similar to the one in the Harry Potter series with this anime rendition by adding the subtle wrinkles beneath his eyes, and the sagging cheeks. Fortunately, he looks better in anime version than he does in real life. As I drew this tutorial, I was listening to various music, from “Safety Dance” to the NIN song “Perfect Drug”. There was SO much inspiration rushing through me as I colored and inked him out once I had the ideal base sketch. You can find my process on my Facebook. STEP 1.
Begin by making a circle shape for the head and then like always draw the face and body guides.
STEP 2.
Using the facial guides, draw out the eyes in the serious expressive shape they are in. The lining should be bold and there should also be some lash marks.
STEP 3.
Sketch out the shape of anime Snape's face like so, and then sketch in the nose, mouth, cheek bones, and then draw in the eyeballs, eyelids, and draw the eyebrows which are also in an expressive gesture.
STEP 4.
You might want to take your time as you sketch out his hairstyle which is as you know somewhat of a mess. His hair is limp and straight. The razor tips convey how the hair is not combed, but it is still decent. Make the long arched bang pieces like so, and sketch in some hair strand detailing. Once the hair is all done sketch in the neck and move to step five.
STEP 5.
Ok, to make things simplistic, we'll start by sketching the left side of his cape, and the heavy wrinkles which immerse with it. Note that because his cape is so long and covering, you will see heavy wrinkle and clothing layers when it's in a position such as this.
STEP 6.
Ok, let's start sketching his arm that extends from the robe he wears. Note that Snape IS a dark potions teacher and he has a long, darkly cape and clothing that covers most of his skin. I'm not sure how old he is in the Harry Potter series, but I'm judging 40? Try to keep distance between the guidelines set, and the placement of the arm. Use LIGHT lines for the detailing of the clothing.
STEP 7.
Next, taking a deep breath, let's start working our way to the hand. The hand should be drawn finger by finger rather than trying to complete it as a whole. Try to draw the boniness of the hand by using sharp - angular lines.
STEP 8.
Then, let's sketch our way to the right side of his arm, which is resting at the height of his waist. I wanted this tut to be extremely simple rather than a full body of complexity. Most novice artists will want to draw his face more than anything. Sketch the heavy regions of wrinkles and overlays in his cape.
STEP 9.
To complete this drawing, furthering your success, let's sketch the finishing details to his clothes; typically the buttons that ladder the undershirt closed (which are gone for simplicity). If you feel the wave a challenge, go ahead and draw the buttons as well. Don't forget to add wrinkles where ever there's a jut in the middle line.
STEP 10.
"I got my head but my head is unraveling!" See how your drawing looks already? It should look similar to this. If not, check your proportions by carefully skimming through this guide as you review your drawing. Clean up your lines and prepare for the inks (using marker or pen).
